Subject: Headbanger's Ball Revisited

Posted by: sadwings
Date: Aug 27 19

Anybody remember Headbanger's Ball on MTV in the 80s and 90s? This is the place to be if you like that kind of noisy stuff. Thought I'd throw a bunch of boss-rocking videos from that era, and I'm sure many from outside that era, and please do feel free to contribute. If it isn't exactly classified as metal or if you aren't really sure, don't worry about it. As long as it rocks a little bit on the harder side. Anything with bands performing on stage or anywhere else along with out of control fans stage diving and crowd surfing is great, but this is certainly not intended to be limited to that. Just grab a fistful of metal and see if you can punch my lights out with it. :-)

Okay, everyone calm down. You know, gang, if a group of guys were going to go around being, let's say the almighty by God Priest Beast for example, and they were going to go around cranking out Priestly tunes like a bunch of maniacs, what better way to begin one of these tunes than in the following ballad? I mean, really.

World class metal complete with filmed proof that the spirit of heavy metal has existed long before it ever came about in the form of music. Come and getcha some, boys! :-)

Besides their terrifying name itself, ever wonder how Judas Priest got the reputation of being a satanic band? The following tune is a great example. May even be the #1 example, complete with ungodly relentless vocal power from beginning to end.

For those of who have a pretty good grip on what was going on in the rock scene from 1970 - 78, keep in mind that this was released in ' 78. Up to that time, nobody had ever done anything even close to this kind of power and magnitude. Nobody named Zeppelin, nobody named Sabbath - nobody. Some people open doors, others splinter them into a vapor cloud. But hey, this was more than 40 years ago, so cast your fears and inhibitions aside and just enjoy a bit of musical history. Just don't enjoy it too much or da debbil might jump out and get ya. ;-)

Okay, the mean ol' antichrist has gone away, at least for a while. Check out this next tune how it starts out all mellow and easy, almost like it's gonna put you to sleep, and then.....ka-pow! Suddenly from out of nowhere it punches you right straight in the grill. :-)

Here's a cool anti-drug tune that doesn't mind beating you in the head until you fall over. :-)

Remember, gang, a song doesn't necessarily have to be heavy metal in order for it to beat you in the head from all angles until you fall down. Check out this soothing little love ballad performed all the way LIVE. They definitely don't make 'em like this any more, that's for sure...

I know you guys want to rock and roll with the baddest rocker on the website, I can just feel it. I don't know if this next tune qualifies as rock and roll or not, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

That last song struck devastating blows on both sides of my head. :-) Here's one for those of you who like to rock but are maybe not quite as hardcore as I am. Great band, great song, cool video. Can't beat it.

That last one was a Def Leppard tune, believe it or not. For all you Def Leppard fans out there, check this next one out and see if Leppard may have possibly been just a little bit of an influence on these cats....

Yeah, I have been having the strangest experience with the links lately. The thing with it not making the right connection the first time, but it always seems to connect on the second click. This is exciting, someone other than me actually posted something on this scary thread! :-)

Okay, speaking of bands who have songs that sound a lot like other bands, I'll be back with a really boss-rocking example.

Any of you rock and roll animals like Aerosmith? This next tune is from the singer from Ratt and the band he fired up when he split from Ratt. This thing has got "Aerosmith" written all over it, up one side and down the other, especially the chorus. I'm not criticizing anyone, I think this is really a boss-rocking tune and I love it. I believe a band should have its own individual sound just as much as anyone else, but it's not like this whole album sounds like Aerosmith, just this one song, and I personally think it's the best one on the album.

Anyway, you guys remember to click the link a second or even a third time if it doesn't work the first time. Rock and roll, man! :-)

Cool tunes, Bizarre, especially that first one. I know I've heard that before somewhere but I don't remember where. I really like the groove on that one. Hey, don't worry at all whether something has a video or not, that's no big deal at all here. It's all about the grooves, yo.

I can't believe I have never heard of Killing Joke before, at least not that I can recall. Especially with all those albums they put out in the 80s. It's kind of funny, one album they did in '86 - Brighter Than a Thousand Suns - is a line from the song Painkiller by the Priest Beast, one of the absolute deadliest metal tunes known to mankind. I started this thread off with that one.

Faster than a laser bullet
Louder than an atom bomb
Chromium plated boiling metal
Brighter than a thousand suns...

Make way for the Hellhammer Deluxe! Toot - toot! :-) Anyway, I tried to think of something that was at least kind of similar to Killing Joke that you might like, but I really couldn't think of anything. However, I thought maybe you could try this number on for size...

Here's a gritty, no game playing, back alley rocker that says "rock and roll" a dozen times throughout the song while it's beating you in the head. :-)

Just another example of how far I fell out of touch with what was going on in the modern music world after 1990 or so. We should be able to cover the bases pretty well from the 70s right on up to the present, yo.

You know, since my avatar photo is one of me getting ready to skateboard right off the stage at an Anthrax concert, and since I also have "Yeaaahhh, boyyyy!" written in the comments space on my profile, I figure I'd better play this next tune before I violate some kind of law or something....
