Bachchan, Amitabh
Harivansh Rai. Harivansh Rai's "Madhushala" is a very well known work and is said to have swayed audiences whenever Mr. Rai recited it on stage. He was also awarded the "Padma Bhushan" and "Sahitya Akademi Award" among many others.
Saat Hindustani. "Saat Hindustani" was released in 1969. Amitabh was the narrator for "Bhuvan Shome" (also 1969) and for "Bawarchi" (1972). "Anand" was released in 1970.
Zanjeer. "Zanjeer" (1973) is Amitabh's 13th movie and his first major success. It also launched him as the "angry young man" of Hindi movies. "Anand" and "Namak Haraam" co-starred Rajesh Khanna, while "Parwana" also starred Navin Nischol.
Jaya. Jaya and Amitabh acted together in two little-known movies before "Zanjeer." They got married on June 2, 1973, a month after the release of "Zanjeer."
Anand. "Anand" in 1971 gave Amitabh the first of his many Filmfare Awards. Amitabh Bachchan portrays a sensitive doctor to Rajesh Khanna in the movie. Amitabh won another Filmfare Award for Supporting Actor for "Namak Haraam" in 1973, while he won the Best Actor Award for both "Amar Akbar Anthony" (1977) and "Don" (1978).
"Agneepath" (1990). Surprising but true. Amitabh has had more "Hits" as an actor than probably anybody else in the history of films but a "Swarna Kamal" (National Award) has come his way just once and that too when he seemed to be sliding and well past his prime. A stellar performance in "Agneepath" though.
Allahabad. Amitabh won from his home town of Allahabad in the 1984 general elections. His electoral foray was the waterloo for a political stalwart called H N Bahuguna but Amitabh's political stint was short-lived. Amitabh got embrolied in one controversy after another and resigned his seat in 1988, vowing never to enter politics again.
BBC. The poll, held on the internet in 1999 saw Amitabh win hands down over such contenders as Charlie Chaplin, Robert De Niro, Sir Lawrence Olivier and Cary Grant. Truly a once in a lifetime phenomenon!
