Just for a start, this animal is called a "Staubmaus" ("dust mouse") in German. In Norway we call them "hybelkanin" ("bedsit rabbit").

I am refering to the term used in the US that signifies large clumps of dust one might find when cleaning under a piece of furniture.

Author's link (at least, the English link) is to an entry for clumps of dust, not to an animal. The word appears to be of US origin, but I cannot find a definitive first use.
