According to the Book of Deuteronomy, twice. Each was before an ascent of Mount Sinai to receive a copy of the Ten Commandments. When Moses came down from the mountain the first time and saw the people sinning, he became angry and smashed the stone tablets on which the Ten Commandments were written. This led to the second ascent.
