Following a performance with Nelson on December 30, 1985, Nelson invited Upton to fly with him to his next performance in Dallas, Texas. Upton declined, citing business obligations. The plane took off without Upton onboard, and in the early hours of December 31 crashed due to an in flight fire, killing Nelson.
