Buddhism is Mongolia's official religion.

The Kalmyks are an ethnic group living in Kalmykia to the west of the Caspian Sea.

Their Kalmyk Oirat language is linguistically close to Standard Mongolian.

They are the only traditionally Buddhist people whose homeland is located within Europe.
