Why do some male orangutans develop facial pads known as flanges?

The facial pads develop in the dominant males and are thought to increase the male's chances of success with the ladies. Much like the dewlap for a Moose, the flanges make the orangutan look handsome to the females resulting in a strong correlation of greater breeding success. Surprisingly, this fashion statement has not made a jump to humans yet...
