People is most commonly used as a general term for multiple individuals regardless of culture, ethnicity, nation or race.

However the word can also be used to denote a specific subset of humanity grouped by one or more of the above categories. In this case a plurality of those subsets can be referred to by the term "peoples".

The word "people" is primarily used as a noun to refer to a group of human beings, considered collectively as a community, society, or population.
For example: "The people of this town are friendly."

The word "peoples" is used when referring to multiple distinct groups or communities of human beings, often with a focus on their cultural, ethnic, or national identities.
For example: "The indigenous peoples of the Amazon rainforest have diverse languages and traditions."

In essence, "people" refers to a group of human beings as a whole, while "peoples" is used to emphasize the existence of multiple distinct groups or communities within a larger context.
