The novel "Vanity Fair" by William Makepeace Thackeray was published as a single volume in 1848 with the subtitle "A Novel without a Hero." The book is set in the Napoleonic wars and follows the lives of Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley. Earlier, it had been published as a 19-volume monthly serial with the subtitle "Pen and Pencil Sketches of English Society."
