Why does Sue Grafton's "Alphabet" series of mystery novels only have 25 volumes?

Sue Grafton's last novel was Yesterday. She intended to write a "Z" novel but died before she could write it. Sadly, Grafton died in 2017 of cancer of the appendix. You don't hear of that one very often.
