The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift, used to connect two Scottish canals together: the Union Canal and the Forth and Clyde Canal. It was constructed as a Millennium Link project and opened in 2002.
The Falkirk Wheel can raise or lower boats by 24 metres (79 feet), but locks are also required for vessels to ascend/descend the final 11 metres (36 feet) between the waterways.
There are only two operational boat lifts in the United Kingdom: the other is the Anderton Boat Lift in Cheshire. The Falkirk Wheel is the only one of its type in the world.
