A davit is a crane that lowers a smaller boat (life boat) from a larger boat. Apparently the word crane was already taken!

The term comes from Middle English and Old French word "daviot" which means little David. Supposedly, the little crane can handle a much bigger life boat just like little David handled the huge Goliath.
