In 79 C.E. thousands of Romans were killed when Mount Vesuvius erupted. For some time, asphyxia from volcanic ash was considered the likely cause of death.

Recently, there has been a different theory.
The victims perished instantaneously, when burning hot gas vaporized their body fluids.

The eruption was not a single event, but happened in two phases.

In the first phase, Vesuvius emitted hot gas, ash and pumice which destroyed the town and its surroundings. Some were crushed but others escaped.

Then followed "pyroclastic surges" that delivered hot ash and lava.
Gas hot enough to evaporate bodily fluids would have burned away clothing... It’s more likely... that the victims died of asphyxia during a lower temperature pyroclastic flow and were buried under a layer of volcanic ash during the early part of the eruption’s second phase.

Bodies found in a rigid "boxer pose" would have died rapidly from vaporisation or dehydration. Those in a more relaxed position probably suffered a slow death from asphyxiation.
