The pupae of the alkali fly (also known as "Ephydra hians") were a staple food of the Kucadikadi, a band of the Northern Paiute people. They lived around Mono Lake, a saline-soda lake in eastern California. The Kucadikadi harvested the fly pupae, which were a valuable source of protein, and used them for food, often drying or grinding them into meal.
