The first Norman warlord to be granted a fief in the politically fragmented Italy of the 11th century was Rainulf Drengot. In 1030, Duke Sergius IV of Naples granted him the county of Aversa in recognition of his military support against rival Lombard and Byzantine forces. This marked the beginning of Norman rule in southern Italy, which would eventually lead to the establishment of the Kingdom of Sicily.
