The word "jaguar" comes from the Tupi-Guarani language family, which is spoken by indigenous peoples in Brazil and surrounding areas. The original Tupi word is "yaguara" (or variants such as "îagûara"), meaning "beast that kills with one leap" or, more generally, "predator".
