The country is the United States of the Ionian Islands. It was a Greek state and a United Kingdom protectorate established in 1815 following the Napoleonic Wars. The union comprised seven main islands in the Ionian Sea, including Corfu (the capital), Cephalonia and Zakynthos. The state existed until 1864, when it was peacefully ceded to the Kingdom of Greece in honour of the coronation of King George I.
