Timbre-poste is French for postage stamp.

The first French postage stamps were issued in the 1840s, but I have not found any official change to the name for them - they are still called timbres-poste in France - so maybe this was in a French colony? Or the Canadian province of Quebec, which would have had its own postal system before the establishment of the Dominion in 1867. New stamps for the nation were issued in 1868.

Until 1864, postage stamps were specifically known as "timbres-poste" in French-speaking countries. While the term "timbre" originally referred to an official paper mark or tax stamp, the specific phrase "timbre-poste" became the universal French designation for the adhesive paper squares used to prepay mail delivery.
