I seem to remember reading that you can't catch a cold there. Presumably the virus can't survive the temperatures.

Most of the sites agree with not being able to catch a cold but only in winter. Any viruses would struggle to survive in the winter temperatures. The artic mosquito is a very rare beast so malaria would be difficult to catch and it is a common ailment as most human deaths have been caused by it throughout history.
