Presumable wine made in the summer, country wine, was consumed in the winter and when devoured, the bottle was dead. The characters in the programme are in their winter, finding things to get up to to eak out the last drops of their ' bottles '. Thats how I read it!

I have a feeling it's a quotation from a poem, but I can't find which one. It has the sound of Yeats, but could be Betjeman, Masefield, Longfellow or Tennyson. Hope this stimulates someone to find it! Or prove me wrong.

Couldn't find a poem, but did come across lyrics written for the theme song.
