U.S.S. stands for United States Ship

USS is United States Ship
SS is Steam Ship

In the UK it is HMS - Her/His Majesty's Ship

m v - motor vessel
m t - motor tanker
these dont vary from country to country. they do not always form part of the name on the hull, but are included as part of the name in official records for information purposes.
