Why do they often call detectives 'dick'?

According to both Merria-Webster link http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?dick and Collins link http://www.wordreference.com/english/definition.asp?en=dick it is simply an alteration and shortening of the word detective, which is a bit boring really, but there you go!
