In "Scent of a Woman" how did Al Pacino's character become blind?

I think during a training he, as an instructor, blinded himself by misusing a grenade. His embarassment over this is brought out when one of his unkind relatives chides him during the Thanksgiving meal...Certainly one of his best roles.

Slade was blinded in a drinking/grenade
game he was playing with one of his drinking buddies according to several sites.
