How did A1 steak sauce get its name? What does the "A1" stand for?

1824-1831 In a time when a kings palate was supreme. Henderson William Brand, chef to England's King George IV, creates a special sauce for the king's table. The king is so impressed with the new sauce, he proclaims it "A1".

"A1 at Lloyds" was used to designate a first-class vessel on Lloyds Register. A1 consequently came to mean anything first-class.

The sauce was based on a recipe created by the chef to King George IV, Henderson William Brand. The King declared the sauce to be A1.
