Charles Valentin Alkan indeed (1813-1888). The book he wanted to reach was his old Talmud.

Well, that's what happens when you put the most important books in the least accessable places. I keep my Bible in my bag along with my book on orchestration, and the Mishnah on a low shelf.

So books can kill you. Making a note for my next library trip...

My important books are also handy. The rest are under the bed--nice low places for a vertically challenged reader.

I never said that books could be hazardous - what I meant was that disrespect for knowledge can be lethal.
