The "My Merry Christmas" Web site features a section called "Ask Ernest," where users can ask Santa Claus-related questions, which "Elf Ernest" (written by the site owner) will respond to. Here is the answer "Ernest" gave when asked about Mrs. Claus:
Dear Ernest,
What is Mrs. Claus' first name?
Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,

I'll tell you, Bill I haven't the foggiest idea.

You see, Mr. and Mrs. Claus are very private people, despite their very public roles. I am in the delicate position of knowing many things and I have been charged with being a spokesperson for the North Pole. It's a great responsibility. And some things, being private, I just won't share.

But on this particular question I have to be honest and say that I just don't know.

There has been some speculation about her first name. Television programs and movies have called her everything from Jessica to Josephine to Aunt Edna to Victoria. But none of those are actually correct.

I have always addressed her as Mrs. Claus. There isn't a written rule about it here at the North Pole, but nobody here would DARE address her as anything else. Even Santa calls her Mrs. Claus. (Although -- every now and then, he'll call her "honey" too.)

I think this is because Santa shows such care and respect for Mrs. Claus. He demands that we are polite around her and he gets very upset when she has to intervene in arguments between the elves. Mrs. Claus is very dignified and warm. She is well mannered and polite. Santa always opens doors for her, seats her at the table and makes certain she dresses warmly when going outside. Because Santa treats her like a queen, the rest of us do too.

There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer. However, there are a few possibilities...

According to the Christmas special "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town," her name is Jessica, and she's a schoolteacher in Sombertown. SantaClaus.com goes a step further, claiming her middle name is Mary. But are those "official" sources?

Other than the good-humored reply that her first name is "Mrs.," there's very little evidence or agreement on what her mama actually named her. In fact, an article from "Santa Land" acknowledges that nobody (not even Santa himself) seems to know her first name.

We do know Mrs. Claus first appeared in 1890, in a book of poetry called "Sunshine and Other Verses for Children." The book's author, Katherine Lee Bates, also wrote the words to the song "America the Beautiful."

It took a song, performed by George Melachrino and His Orchestra in 1954 and Nat King Cole in 1956, to launch Mrs. Claus into popular consciousness. And considering Santa's workload, it's a good thing he has someone looking after him.

However, in the 19th century, when Santa Claus began having more of a secular association, authors began giving him a wife.
