Large Blue Horses
By Franz Marc
Author Award for November 2024
Though Franz Marc painted other colorful animals, such as a yellow cow, a purple fox, and a red bull, it is his blue horses that he is most remembered for. "Large Blue Horses" is a work of the German Expressionist movement, which sought to evoke emotion in painting over realism.
Marc's paintings came to be seen as "degenerate" along with several others during Nazi rule, and they were removed from German museums and sold. This particular painting made its way to the United States, where it was purchased by the T.B. Walker Foundation and displayed.
