The Old Guitarist
By Pablo Picasso
Author Award for February 2024
The most famous painting from Picasso's Blue Period, "The Old Guitarist" was painted when the artist was living in relative poverty. His close friend and fellow painter, Casagemas, had recently committed suicide before Picasso began work on the painting. Picasso's Blue Period often displayed the poor and miserable, and he was no stranger to such melancholy scenes.
Recent x-ray and infrared examinations have determined that there were at least two other separate paintings underneath "The Old Guitarist." Three separate subjects have been discovered: an old woman, a young mother, and a child. It is unknown why the previous paintings went uncompleted when Picasso began this work.
