The Astronomer
By Johannes Vermeer
Author Award for January 2025
"The Astronomer" and its companion painting, "The Geographer," were Vermeer's take on Dutch scientists of the time. The soft light that pours through the window was meant to convey a sense of serenity, but also one of focus and solemnity. A product of the Dutch Golden Age, the painting portrays the idea that academic pursuits were considered some of the most noble one could pursue.
The celestial globe in the painting was based on a real model created in the 17th century. As one would expect of an artist in the Netherlands, it depicts constellations within the Northern Hemisphere.
