A Wheatfield with Cypresses

By Vincent van Gogh

Painting Information
Like many of Vincent van Gogh's famous paintings, "A Wheatfield with Cypresses" depicts a scene outside the mental asylum in Saint-Rémy in which he was a patient. This particular painting was also displayed at the asylum.

The large tree on the right is the cypress while the smaller bushy like trees to the left are olive trees. In the foreground is the titular wheat field, while the background displays the Alpilles mountains. Van Gogh believed the painting to be amongst his best summer paintings, and he said so in a letter to his brother, Theo. The cobalt blue and chrome yellow pigments are commonly seen in his other paintings.
