Four, three, two, and one. Those are the ages of my grandchildren who have visited and stayed with us these past two weeks. I am exhausted. They managed to invade every drawer and closet. Our garbage output tripled. And imagine traveling in a vehicle with four carseats. It was fun, But I can wait six months until their next visit. Reply #18742. Jul 20 18, 8:47 AM |

There would be a lot more conflict if not for laws, because people would undoubtedly have different views about what's fair or right and some would do whatever they pleased regardless of the effect on others. Reply #18743. Jul 20 18, 10:31 AM |

Even primitive societies had some laws or taboos, as they might be, but without laws it would be a case of 'might is right'. Reply #18744. Jul 20 18, 10:32 AM |

Someone mentioned fresh cherries earlier here. Yes, they are delicious! I was surprised, though, when I tried the frozen ones and found that they are pretty good too. A little different than fresh, of course, but good. I usually put a few in the microwave and eat them warm. Reply #18749. Jul 20 18, 9:13 PM |

I saw this somewhere quite a long time ago: Mr Meant-To has a comrade, And his name is Didn't-Do. Have you ever chanced to meet them? Have they ever called on you? These two fellows live together In the house of Never-Win, And I'm told that it is haunted By the ghost of Might-Have-Been. Reply #18750. Jul 21 18, 1:10 AM |

Musings on Irish humour and anecdotes today, here are a few of them: Seamus was getting exasperated and shouted upstairs to his wife," Sheila, will you please hurry up or we'll be late." "Oh, calm yourself, Seamus" Sheila replied. "Haven't I been telling you for the last hour that I'll be ready in a minute?" I often take exercise. Only yesterday I had breakfast in bed." Oscar Wilde Mr Patrick Kavanagh was recently reported as having declared that “there is no such thing as Gaelic literature”. This is hard luck on the institute of Advanced Studies, who are supposed to be looking into the thing. I attended the Book Fair in the Mansion House the other evening in the hope of overhearing other similar pronouncements from the writing persons who infest such a place. I heard plenty, and have recorded it in my note-books under “Stuff To Be Used If Certain People Put Their Heads Out”. Flann O'Brien from The Best of Myles Mr. de Valera has been talking non-stop since eight o'clock this morning, filling me in on the background to the Irish fight for freedom. And after eight hours and sixteen minutes he hasn't even reached the Norman invasion of Ireland yet. Attributed to David Lloyd George - probably apocryphal Ireland remains a deeply religious country, with the two main denominations being "us" and "them". In the unlikely event you are asked which group you belong to, the correct answer is:"I'm an atheist, thank God". And ending with a - Blessing for a Journey O Brigit, bless our road, that calamity may not overtake us as we travel; O veiled one from the laden Liffey may we reach home safely by your intercession. Nothing interesting lately in my life unless you count the flooded laundry room from a leak. Thank goodness for Fun Trivia! All the new upgrades etc. here are definitely the most interesting things in my life. I'm not complaining at all. At 74 years, I'm not very interested in excitement. Reply #18752. I'd far rather spend a day playing various games, doing email, reading, etc. on my computer than spend a day dealing with crises. Give me the peaceful life! Reply #18755. Jul 21 18, 2:33 PM |

I've been geocaching the last few weekends, but probably won't go tomorrow. It's supposed to rain for the next three days. It's okay, though, we need it. Reply #18756. Jul 21 18, 7:26 PM |

Wow, this challenge twice in three days! How weird. I'm still eating cherries. I mean now, right now, I'm chewing one. They make me so happy. :-) Reply #18757. Jul 21 18, 11:06 PM |

I have this challenge again! Well, I had a very successful walk yesterday. It only took me 11 hours, not the 13 that I was expecting, and the weather was perfect - there was heavy clag in the morning which lifted before I started my ascent, and after that there was a fresh breeze and it wasn't too hot, while there was still good visibility. And I didn't get lost once. :-) Reply #18760. Jul 22 18, 1:55 AM |
