The longest book I've read all the way through is the Bible. How many pages are there in Edward Rutherford's 'Sarum' or Ken Follett's 'Pillars of the Earth'? I know that both books would make impressive doorstops, along with Karen Armstrong's 'The Battle for God'. Reply #181. Apr 15 08, 7:42 PM |

"The Talisman" (Scott) when I was 12 - it may not have been that long but my goodness it went on for ever; "Lord of the Rings" (Tolkien) when I was in the sixth form - that did go on for ever; "Gone With The Wind" (Mitchell); the first four books in the "Earth's Children" series (Auel). Nice doorstop comment Cym :) I can't remember which was the longest, but I can remember which one felt the longest: he Quincunx by Charles Palliser. I've read one Dan Brown novel (horrible book, but easy reading), maybe a dozen Stephen Kings (very entertaining) and read LOTR once a year (relaxing). Some of them might have more pages, but none of them by far was such a struggle as the Quincunx. By the way, does the "World Almanac 2007" count? It has over 1000 pages :) Paul Reply #183. Forgot to say, I read "Pillars of the Earth" too. Very engrossing medieval novel (don't use it as doorstop, it's paperback), but when Follett started to describe that noble's fourth rape I was thinking "this book is too long". Paul(again) Reply #184. Apr 22 08, 7:23 PM |

War and Peace. A Christmas Carol? Not a very long book -- a novella -- not even considered a full novel.. Reply #185. Apr 22 08, 7:33 PM |

"Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand...read it not long after it had mocked to death on South Park and oddly enough loved it. Reply #186. Apr 22 08, 8:11 PM |

"Cien años de soledad" (One Hundred Years of Solitude). A novel by Colombian author and Noble Prize winning Gabriel García Márquez. It was one of my subjects in high school and one of the most interesting of the few that I have read. Reply #187. Apr 26 08, 9:15 AM |

I love reading but have to agree with you Cym. War and Peace was a very hard read and I also gave up after a few chapters. Crime and Punishment was a longer one I read that was tough also. Reply #194. Aug 22 08, 9:43 PM |

I don't know what is the longest. I've read "The Stand", GWTW, LOTR, all the Harry Potters, Chronicles of Narnia, The Outlander series, Children of the Earth series. The only book I've ever read printed in two volumes was "The Far Pavillions" by M.M. Kaye. Wonderful book, follow-up to her "Shadows of the Moon" (which was much shorter). Reply #195. Still reading Steven Eriksons Reapers' Gale - 1280 page fantasy - 10 books in the series apparently. I am still going despite problems like remembering who is who, what races are feuding with what other races & things like the military rank of fist - you have to work it out from context if it the equivalent of colonel or corporal. I had to read Proust's 7 volume, "Remembrance of Things Past", in French, all 3,000 pages, as though the series was one book. I never took another French lit course. No Cliffs Notes in French. Ugh. Reply #199. Sep 06 08, 10:31 PM |
