Depending on whether word count or page count means a book is the longest, then The Count of Monte Cristo is the longest in terms of pages--almost 1500 in the edition I read. For word count, it's probably War and Peace--I read every word of that book, including the 100-page historical essay epilogue. Reply #321. Feb 12 13, 7:38 PM |

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand~ 1,088 pages (only read it to see if I agreed with Officer Barbrady's assessment of it on South Park). I did. Reply #323. Feb 12 13, 11:05 PM |

It's taking me three years to read Moby Dick and I still haven't finished it. I know it's not long but I have trouble maintaining interest. Reply #325. Mar 27 13, 8:02 PM |

I read War and Peace during the school holidays when I was 16. It took me about a month. A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth was also pretty long. Reply #330. Oct 21 13, 3:48 PM |

Les Miserables by Victor Hugo - the translation I read was 1462 pages (however, I still have to go back and read one or two passages where Hugo went off into a rant about history for like 50 pages). Reply #331. Nov 17 13, 6:24 PM |

Not sure if it's the longest I've ever read, but I ploughed my way through "Robinson Crusoe' as a young kid. Took me weeks, back and forth to the library to renew, but it was a real sense of achievement when I finished it! Great story to stimulate a young imagination, too. Reply #332. Nov 22 13, 7:36 AM |

Out of all the ones I've read, Infinite Jest probably took me the longest. Not only is it over a thousand pages long, but it's difficult to read and there are at least 200 pages of footnotes in the back. It took me even longer than Les Miserables, which is over 1400 pages. Other lengthy ones were The Stand, It, The Count of Monte Cristo, Pillars of the Earth, Swan Song, Otherland 4, Lonesome Dove, and Gravity's Rainbow (another head scratcher ~ I even read it twice).
