Subject: Worst Book Ever

What is the worst book you have ever read?

I have read two- "Silas Marner" (sorry if I'm offending you if you liked it. I thought it was so weird) and that children's book "The Giving Tree". I about cried when I read that one. If you've never heard of it, you're blessed.

Your thoughts??

I just started reading "Eat Pray Love" for my book club. This was a very popular bestseller. I'm about a third of the way into it and don't know if I can stand to finish reading it as the author seems to me like a self-absorbed, whining, spoiled brat. Is there any reason to finish reading this book?

"Fahrenheit 451". I couldn't stand it. I don't care how many people call it a classic. It was horrible.

Just off the top of my head, My Name is Not Angelica by Scott O'Dell, and Behind the Attic Wall (don't remember the author, but it's a Newberry book.) Couldn't stand either! I was not happy with how either ended in the least. It's not that I expected a happy ending, but *SPOILERS* I was so depressed that the main character in My Name is Not Angelica stayed behind. I'm sorry, maybe I'm supposed to be happy she didn't jump, but she's going to be tortured to death anyway. If there is a case where suicide is the best option, that was it, I think. And as for Behind the Attic wall—what was with the ending on that? Man. Depressing book throughout, but the ending really clinched it.

The Master And Margarita. I'd read about 5 pages and I was ready to throw up! This contradicted everything I've ever learned and will ever learn about the Bible. Satan's Dream should be its title - it depicted Jesus Christ as someone week who has to seek advice and approval from Satan. That's impossible - Jesus kicked both Satan and his demons out of heaven and wouldn't consult with any of them, ever.

I think it's Tolstoy's War and Peace.

The only books I've ever started reading and just could not finish are The Awakening and Lady Chatterley's Lover.

Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow is the book that springs to mind plus anything I had to read for school.

I don't like anything by Ayn Rand. I think Atlas Shrugged is probably the most boring and one of the longest books I was required to read in high school.

I hadn't realised that Sarah Palin's talents included writing, until yesterday, when I stumbled upon one of her books on sale at Amazon, starting price 45 cents.

Twilight. I slogged through the first two "novels". What trash. Vampires do not sparkle in the sun, they turn to dust. The movies were similarly awful, yet still managed to be slightly better than the books which never happens.

Anything by Thomas Hardy. Dense prose, page after page after page of it. Comes firmly into the description of why use one sentence of description if you can manage a whole chapter. By about halfway through Tess of the D'Urbevilles I wanted to give her a good slap and I never did finish the book.

Oh, I so agree! What seemed like 50,000 pages to describe a 10 minute walk over Egdon Heath. I don't mind the actual "stories" just the turgid description.

Re Eat, Pray, Love .... is there any reason to finish the book you are reading?

No. It never does improve.

MsKreant: The movie was horrible, too! I usually like Julia Roberts but even she couldn't save this movie! XP

MsKreant - I finished reading Eat Pray Love and indeed you are correct - it did not get any better so I consider it a waste of time. It did however make for an interesting book club discussion and reading the book saved me from making the mistake that callie made and watching the movie.

I once tried, tried mind you to read "Tristram Shandy", by
Laurence Sterne. Wow. A study in futility.
