Subject: 20 Questions (single question game)

Posted by: trident
Date: May 29 19

Welcome to our new single question game! This is an idea I’ve been mulling over for a while, so I thought we could give it a shot and see how it goes. Those who want to play should be ready for a challenge. You could encounter any number of topics, so I recommend that players only join if they feel comfortable with being given a completely random topic that they might not know much about.

The premise of this game finds itself in the game 20 Questions. Players will post a yes/no question to this thread. I will answer each question, and then pose a single question topic to the player who asked the question. Here’s the catch: the single question topic I give you will be based on the question that you have asked me. If your question is “Is it a type of cookie?” and I say yes, your single question topic will be about a type of cookie (without being the actual correct answer). If I say no, well, there are lots of things in the world that aren't cookies! This will make more sense as we play along.

Guess the thing correctly, and you will score a point for the 20 Questions leaderboard.

Some quick rules are in order before we start:

1. Please only ask yes/no questions. Answers may sometimes be a little more nuanced than yes/no. The host may also give some hints to help players along.

2. Players may ask more than one question in a row (i.e. with no other players in between), but you must write your previous single question before asking another question.

3. You must have asked a yes/no question previously (and submitted the single question given to you) before you can make a final guess. This is to prevent players from coming in at the last moment and stealing the point from other players.

4. If you would like to make a final guess as to what the thing is, you must put the word GUESS before your guess. This is for clarity’s sake. Ex. GUESS: Is the thing The Statue of Liberty? There is no need to write a single question after final guesses (unless you really want to!).

5. If your final GUESS is incorrect, you must wait 24 hours from the time you made the guess to make another final GUESS. You must also ask a yes/no question and write its single question before making an additional final GUESS. (You don’t need to wait 24 hours to ask the yes/no question.)

6. The host should try not to pick topics that are overly broad or incredibly specific. Try to keep a nice balance so players aren’t left feeling frustrated.

7. The round host has the final say on decisions of rule-keeping and order. Thank you, hosts!

I’m excited to see if this game will work well considering how insightful our authors are. Let’s see if we can get this off the ground. I’m ready to answer your questions!

"Is it a Lonely Planet travel guide?"

Is this a final guess? Final guesses need GUESS in big letters before them so that I know you are trying to get the 20 Questions point instead of just asking a yes/no question that is trying to narrow down the topic.

Why do I have a hunch that Shadow is correct..Nice technique of asking a question and immediately guessing, though. ;-)

I don’t know why I thought SkyMall was invented more than a century ago but now it’s canon.

Hey, they had planes then. Browse Skymall in your Sopwith Camel.

It wasn't a technique so much, as I was super busy all weekend, and reading through the thread had an idea. Just wanted to guess before I forgot to what I was going to guess.

So, are we allowed to make a guess before submitting our single question? I know it doesn’t say we can’t, but I just thought that it would be the same...make a guess only after submitting the question.

I would have thought that the spirit of the rule stating that there must be a question before a guess would mean you have to wait for a response before proceeding to a guess. It is supposed to prevent unsportsmanlike jumping in to guess after others have done all the groundwork, and a rapid-fire question-guess combo rather defeats the purpose of the stipulation.

Please note that I am NOT saying this instance was intentionally unsportsmanlike, but that commending it as a clever tactic is promoting what feels to me like the wrong approach to the game.

And I hadn't thought of it as a tactic LT, once it was pointed out as clever, it felt a little underhanded, but it hadn't been my intention. Regardless of how it's ruled, I wouldn't do it like that again personally.

I didn't see it as underhanded, and I normally err on the side of good intent. Talking about it allows us to better clean up the rules to make a stronger game.

Shadowmyst2004, your single question topic is about -- "To the Lighthouse" by Virginia Woolf.

Also, as to the "tactic", which certainly didn't look intentional, yes, your yes/no question must be answered and your single question submitted before posting a final guess. I'm not going to count the guess that was already made, and you can make another after you submit your question,

"Guess: Is it a passport?"

As sally0malley, mentioned, this has already been guessed.
