1967: 'Boston Strangler' sentenced to life The man who claims to be the 'Boston Strangler' has been jailed for life after being found guilty of assault and armed robbery against four women in Connecticut. Albert DeSalvo says he murdered 13 single women in the Boston area between June 1962 and January 1964, creating a climate of fear in the city. January 19th 2001: 'Internet twins' taken into care The American twin girls at the centre of an internet adoption scandal have been seized from a hotel in north Wales and taken into care. The girls were staying with British couple Alan and Judith Kilshaw who say they paid £8,000 to adopt the girls over the internet. The Kilshaws now plan to fight for custody of the babies through the courts. Belinda and Kymberley, who are six-months-old, have been the subject of a tug of love between two would-be sets of adoptive parents, on both sides of the Atlantic. The scandal first erupted when American couple Vickie and Richard Allen complained the twins were taken from them as they were finalising an internet deal to adopt the girls for £4,000. Reply #3. January 20th 1961: John F Kennedy sworn in as US president The Democrat John F Kennedy has been sworn in as the youngest ever elected president of the United States. The 43-year-old Roman Catholic was inaugurated as the 35th president on a snow-covered Capitol Hill in Washington. January 21st 1981: Tehran frees US hostages after 444 days The 52 American hostages held at the US embassy in Tehran for more than 14 months have arrived in West Germany on their way home to the United States. The former diplomats and embassy staff stepped from the plane onto the tarmac at Wiesbaden airport looking tired but elated after their 4,000-mile (6,437km) flight from Iran. January 22nd 1979 Public sector strike paralyses country Tens of thousands of public sector workers have taken part in a day of action - the biggest mass stoppage since 1926 - in support of a claim for more pay. The four major public service unions angry at the government's attempt to impose a 5% pay ceiling called out their 1.5 million members. They included hospital workers, rubbish collectors, school caretakers, grave diggers and airport staff. 23rd January 1973: Nixon announces Vietnam peace deal The US president, Richard Nixon, has appeared on national television to announce "peace with honour" in Vietnam. Statements issued simultaneously in Washington and Hanoi confirmed the peace deal was signed in Paris at 1230 local time, bringing to an end America's longest war. 24th January 1965 Winston Churchill dies Sir Winston Churchill has died at the age of 90 with his wife Lady Clementine Churchill and other members of the family at his bedside. He suffered a stroke 15 days ago and gradually slipped into a deep sleep from which he never awakened. Sir Winston died in his London home at Hyde Park Gate. Earlier in his illness, there had been crowds anxiously waiting for news at the top of the quiet Kensington cul-de-sac - but when the announcement finally came there was only a handful of journalists in the street. 25th January 1990: Children killed in devastating storm At least 39 people, some of them children, have died in the worst weather to hit England and Wales since the 1987 storm. Hurricane-force winds gusting in from the south-west brought chaos with many railway stations, roads and ports forced to close and some flights to major airports in England were diverted. The severe weather also affected other parts of Europe, killing at least 21 people in France, the Netherlands and Belgium, and caused disruption and damage in West Germany. The number of people killed in Britain is believed to be higher than that in 1987 because the storm struck during the day. 27th January 1945: Auschwitz death camp liberated The Red Army has liberated the Nazis' biggest concentration camp at Auschwitz in south-western Poland. According to reports, hundreds of thousands of Polish people, as well as Jews from a number of other European countries, have been held prisoner there in appalling conditions and many have been killed in the gas chambers. Few details have emerged of the capture of Auschwitz, which has gained a reputation as the most notorious of the Nazi death camps. Some reports say the German guards were given orders several days ago to destroy the crematoria and gas chambers. 28th January 1986: Seven dead in space shuttle disaster The American space shuttle, Challenger, has exploded killing all seven astronauts on board. The five men and two women - including the first teacher in space - were just over a minute into their flight from Cape Canaveral in Florida when the Challenger blew up. The astronauts' families, at the airbase, and millions of Americans witnessed the world's worst space disaster live on TV. 29th January 1976 Explosions rock London's West End A series of bombs have exploded in the West End of London during the night - one person, believed to be a taxi driver, has been hurt. Twelve devices went off - four of them were outside employment agencies and another was found in Selfridge's department store in Oxford Street. A 13th device was discovered later in an HMV record store. Police say the bombs were small, between about 3-5bl (1.2-2kg). Several of them started small fires. 30th January 1965 Last farewell to Churchill Thousands of people have paid their last respects to Britain's greatest wartime leader Sir Winston Churchill who was buried today after a full state funeral. Silent crowds lined the streets to watch the gun carriage bearing Sir Winston's coffin leave Westminster Hall as Big Ben struck 0945. The procession travelled slowly through central London to St Paul's cathedral for the funeral service. Sir Winston died six days ago, following a stroke earlier in the month from which he never regained consciousness. A total of 321,360 people filed past the catafalque during the three days of lying-in-state. January 31 st 1968: Americans alarmed by 'Tet Offensive' The American command in Vietnam has reported over 5,000 people dead after two days intensive fighting. South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu has been forced to declare martial law as communist forces, under General Vo Nguyen Giap, have kept up sustained assaults on several fronts - from Saigon in the south to Hue in the north. Authorities in the North Vietnamese capital Hanoi, described it as, "a more powerful and more continuous offensive" than ever before. White House intelligence in Washington anticipated attacks over the Tet holiday to celebrate the lunar new year, but they were surprised by their intensity.
