Today marks the 100th anniversary of the death of one of the greatest heroes in the Irish War of Independence, Cathal Brugha (1874-1922). Second in command to Eamonn Ceant at the South Dublin Union during the Easter Rebellion, Brugha suffered 22 bullet and shrapnel wounds during the fighting. He was found lying in a pool of his own blood, holding off a large British force with only a revolver, singing "God Save Ireland." It was later said of him that he had "so many English bullets in him that he rattled when he walked." He was spared execution for his role in the rising because he was given no chance to live. But live he did.

Brugha later became the first president of Dáil Éireann, and served as Chief of Staff of the Irish Republican Army during the War of Independence. Brugha detested Michael Collins, who he regarded as little better than a traitor. Brugha was one of the leaders of the opposition to ratification of the disgraceful Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921.

Although Brugha did all he could to prevent the outbreak of the Irish Civil War, when hostilities broke out, he joined the Anti-Treaty Republicans. During the Battle of Dublin, on July 5, 1922, he ordered his men disperse, and charged the Free State lines to give them a chance to escape. He suffered a wound in the leg that severed his femoral artery, and died two days later,

Irish historians have maligned Brugha's memory because of his disgust of Collins, calling him a hothead and a fanatic. He was neither. He was a true patriot. If you want a hero, look no further than Cathal Brugha.
