Subject: What do you thank foreigners for?

Instead of pointing fingers and casting blame, what things do you appreciate?

I thank the Brits for their music, the Italians and Greeks for their cuisine.

Actually I am just thankful that I am not a "foreigner". Because I am here but if I were somewhere else I might be one, but hopefully I would fit in and no one would notice.

Siz, where is 'here'? We are all foreigners to someone. If 'here' is FT, I tend to agree. We, hopefully, transcend national borders.

My favorite people from a foreign country are Texans. They all have been so nice and kind to others.

What is a 'Foreigner'?
If you go on vacation you are a foreigner.
Isn't it all just an accident of nature, where we are born lol

The food that 'foreigners' bring to their new countries.

In 'migrant' countries (U.S.A., Australia) we can thank these
people for delicious dishes like curries, chilli con carne etc.

Thank you!

Marmalade is made in many countries. I don't know the history of marmalade but as it is primarily made from oranges I imagine it originated in a warm country where oranges grow.
I thank our Asian friends for their wonderful curries.

Merrymas, there are references to a fruit preserve going back to the Romans and Greeks. It was originally made using quinces and honey. The word marmalade comes from the Portuguese name for that preserve, 'marmalo'. In Britain oranges were first used around the 17th century when they first became plentiful.

I don't want to thank anyone for curry. Is has to be the most awful dish. Even the smell gets to me, can't stand it.

Without immigrants we would not have such a lovely variety of food and music would be pretty dull.

We can thank the Chinese for paper, fireworks, silk, china, gunpowder ( a controversial one that) and playing cards.

We can thank the Irish for probably building much of the infrastructure of the countries they emigrated to in industrial times and after as well as marvellous literature and keeping literacy alive in Europe during the Dark Ages and converting much of Europe to Christianity.

We can thank Africans for their huge influence on Western music and for creating much of the wealth of Western countries though it was through slavery and not a happy history, and these days we have all the brilliant footballers that come from that continent. Also thanks to them, and their continuous struggle, the pernicious system of apartheid was overthrown in South Africa and much equality legislation was passed.

I could go on but where would it end?

That's true. In particular there are a lot of Germanic words, and words of Latin and French origin, but there are also words from farther afield such as India (pyjamas, bungalow, and wallah, being examples)

A lot of mathematical concepts and theories came from The Greeks and the Arabs. A lot of philosophical and political concepts came from the Greeks. A lot of architectural, artistic influences came from Roman and Renaissance Italy as well as entertainments, theatre from Greece - ballet and Comedia De'l Arte, and music from Italy.
