Subject: Who Am I

Posted by: bubbatom1

Who is happy with the latest Who Am I? being changed into a daily game instead of an hourly game? I really miss playing this game hourly. How do you feel?

Don't know if I've posted this in the right thread, but I'm sure I'll be told if it's not!

I'm loving it and is now a part of my regular daily challenge.

As Editor of the game, I was disappointed at it being made into a Daily Game. However, it now has a lot more players in this format. So I'll accept it.

I do wish Terry would fix all of the minor problems with the various displays, though. I've listed the needed changes numerous times in the Feedback Forum, but still no action on them.

I continue to collect new entries to eventually add to the game. I have 400+ names that didn't make it into the last update. I'll weed out the current really obscure entries as they turn up on my 'Obscure List'. If anyone has entries that they would like added in the future, just send me a list of names. Descriptions aren't necessary unless you want really obscure people added.

Happy New WAI Trivia!

I play it every day lately, although I usually play the easier version. I know you have worked hard on it, John. :)

You've done a great job JM - when it started it was mainly Brits who were famous 30 years ago - great for us Brits of a certain age but not so good for everyone else! It's also a pretty democratic game, there have been several open calls for people to submit names and I'd suspect a large part of the database is made up from those contributions. It's much more of a worldwide database now.

dsimpy, the last three days I played WAI I got 4, 8 and 8 American questions, when is the last time you saw that many UK, Irish or Australian questions in a quiz? As for your comment on the Americans not knowing an actor from Coronation Street but the UK not having the same problems with US sit-coms well why, what about ones that were never shown over here, I've never heard of some of them or the people that starred in them. As for someone's comment that after all FT is American well enough said there I think. If JMElston's offer is still open I will send a list of none-American names in until then I just hope someone plays the same group of questions as I do.

JM has been putting out calls for us to give him names for quite some time. I added a few Canadian names a few months ago - if you think the UK isn't well represented, try Canada!

I never said the UK wasn't represented and I agree there have not been many Canadian questions either. Less than Australia I think, although Pierre Trudeau and Calgary crop up regularly

My set on the difficult game today turned up 6 USA, 2 UK and 1 each of German, Chinese, Spanish, French, Australia, India and Japan. None of the names from 'other' countries were that obscure and in any case, tended to be the only German, Spanish etc names in the list. I only tripped up on one and that was by not following my golden rule - if it's an american name you don't know, pick the one with the middle initial!

To shipyardbernie, there was a reason I wrote that my post *wasn't* directed at the person who posted above me! There was nothing personally directed at you; I was simply stating that many people seem to assume that being American means you know all about baseball etc., whereas those subjects may be just as obscure to an American as to others. :) I know absolutely nothing about German or British sports, for example, so these also mean nothing to me!
Actually, I personally feel in the WAI game that it's rarer for an American to come up - much harder to guess! :) Probably if I counted them up, there would be more Americans than I think, but I don't feel overwhelmed by it :) As has been said, if anyone feels any country is under-represented, send some entries to JMElston (sorry if I wrote that wrong! :P)

The original WAI database was certainly biased to the UK. Terry deleted a number of 'obscure to many' UK sports figures (cricketers & footballers mostly) before I took over editing the game. Being American my original personal additions were heavily slanted towards the US, although I did try to include a wide variety of non-UK & non-Americans by using various countries (European & North/South American mostly) postage stamp lists.

The second database add contained a lot of player submitted names. These may have been slanted to Americans, since there are more US players of the game. I included 12 more countries postal lists to balance things. I did get quite a few female entries in the player submitted lists, but there is still a large male/female imbalance in the database. I deleted numerous really obscure people, but there are still a number of questionable entries that will get replaced eventually.

As I indicated above, I am continuing to collect entries to be added eventually. If any one has suggestions, just send me a list of candidate names. Don't worry about whether they might already be in the game, and no descriptions are necessary.

There are few Africans, Middle Easterners & Asians (other than Russians) in the game. Women are still under represented. Canada, Australia & New Zealand are also still under represented even though I included their postal lists.

Happy WAI Trivia!

I really enjoy this game - I play it most days ( easier) some folks I've never heard of but overall I don't notice too much bias.

One thing that needs to be fixed is that teams are only awarded points in it if their players play on the difficult level. I think that points should be awarded to the all of the top difficult players first, and then the left over slots in the top 200 should go to the highest scorers who played on easy difficulty.
