Subject: Gold Madness vs Obscurity

Posted by: diablica

In GM game googling is prohibited and punished with time penalties; in Obscurity game is allowed and even encouraged (Researcher badge). They are both Gold Members games, both contain very difficult questions (in fact, GM questions are much longer and yet you have to read them more quickly)... so why are the two games treated so differently?

The questions are quite similar: I love playing Obscurity, Madness I can take or leave it.

Madness has questions from quizzes that were put online in the last 30 days. The questions may be of any difficulty level. Obscure has questions from quizzes that may have been online for years and have a very small percentage of players who have got them correct. So they're not really the same type of game.

The short answer to your question would be "because they are different games". They are measuring different skills. We aim, in making the badges and challenges, to have something for everyone - there is no one type of skill that will get you all of the badges.

You wouldn't bother watching the Olympics if all they had were races, would you?

It would all depend on wether or not you're better at fairly difficult questions (Obscurity) or completly insane questions (GMM). My favourite? GMM by a long way. It challenges the mind to the limit. Probably beyond, if it tried hard enough.

The Obscure Researcher badge is way out of my league! That's one tough badge! However hope springs eternal, and who knows..

As Agony said, they are two different games.

Perhaps it would add another dimension to the GMM if Terry were to add a researcher badge. As the questions are usually easerie in GMM than in LOTO, the badge could be for 15/15 in 250 seconds or less, but the same time penalties apply. That'd give people a choice - do they play normally in the hope of hitting the top spot, or do they forgo the top spot in the hope of getting the Researcher badge.
