Subject: To discuss or to chat

I'm relatively new around here, and only lately have I discovered and dared venture into the "Fun Trivia Discussion Forums" section, the one where you need a new ID to be able to join in and participate. I've become very familiar with the alternate "Category Chat Boards" section. I am curious as to what the difference is between these two sections. And please forgive my ignorance. Thank you.

No-one has answered so far. It´s a pity. I am interested in the answers, too. Why to join the Forum, if you can discuss things on the chat boards?

The Forum seems to be more for feedback, and asking technical questions about quizwriting etc. Although there actually is a chat section, I've had bad experiences with it. :/ Someone close to me logged in for the first time a while ago, and she contributed to certain threads she felt strongly about enough to write her opinion on - she was shot down by the others (some who weren't even mods) for "deliberately creating controversy" etc. When I made a Forum account just then to defend her as she was getting really upset, we were accused of being the same person and making multiple accounts to cheat - after writing this, the mod then locked the thread in question without giving me a chance to explain. All was fixed when I sent her a message politely telling her how out of line it was for a mod, and frankly immature for a lady of her age.

This is only one experience, but I nor my friend in question have been back to the Forum to chat, only to ask editors etc. about quizwriting. It's also not an isolated incident, as many people in my team completely avoid the forum for these reasons - even an editor agreed it was extremely argumentative. Sorry for painting the Fora in such a bad light, but it's a little warning sign :) I and others have found the chat boards to be much more informal and friendly :)

I think it's a question of personal taste. On the whole, those who frequent the Forums tend to be a little older.

Originally the chat boards were set up so that the kids who wanted to have "what's your favourite colour" type threads wouldn't be cluttering up the Forums. Over the years, things have evolved to the point where a reasonable adult can be at home in either place.

You don't have to register to read the Forum threads, so I'd suggest spending a little time lurking, until you see where you are most likely to be comfortable.

I like both, but I have a very hard time getting into the Forums. I accidentally logged out and cannot get back in despite using the same name and password. It is too much of a bother. I do like reading the comments in the Forum but some of them I would like to reply to if I could just get in.

I like both places too, but in some instances, the discussion forums make having a discussion easier, in that you can quote other posts. I just like the overall format of the forums, and how it's organized. The chat boards are fine too, but like agony said, seem to better for the "Who's your favourite author", "What kind of soda do you like", kinds of threads where everyone offers their comments, but it's less of a 'discussion'. I find it easier to discuss specific topics (like current events) in the discussion forums and like that it's not organized by quiz category. Plus the chain games are there and i like those!

I am not in the Forum but sometimes I peep in. I really like the photos, most of them are beautiful.

Another aspect of the forums is the chat boards only started in 2003, so anyone here who wanted a chat before then only had the forums so although most of us have spread over to the chat boards as well I think those who started on the forums tend to gravitate there. And as Agony says, they are more for serious discussion and the chats do allow all sorts of informal chats that wouldn't have fit in the forums. It's good to have both but the best way to use them is to use both depending what you want to talk about, I always have.

The 'Chat Boards' are for the more light hearted stuff, originally they were to chat about the relevant quiz categories. They have moved on somewhat since they were set up but serious topics are generally discouraged. Certain topics are actively discouraged, but generally speaking anything that people can 'chat' about is allowed.

I agree the Chat boards are for more informal stuff and the Forums for more serious stuff.
