I love reading just like anyone else.
Who here owns a Kindle reading device. Or any other eReader?

Don't own one, won't own one.
Last night, I took all the books off one shelf in my bookroom and dusted the shelves, rearranged the books and found something I felt it was time to reread.
The whole exercise gave me great pleasure and was something I wouldn't be able to do with a Kindle.

You and me both, Tezza. The only line of poetry by Emily Dickinson that resonates with me is the one that goes 'A wondrous frigate is a book'. I am a bibliophile first grade. A Kindle could never replace the feel of a book in one's hands, the smell of the ink on the page when one opens a brand new book, the joy of book-lined shelves in every room of the house (yes, even the bathroom!)

I don't have a Kindle myself, but know several people who do and they all rave about them. One loved hers so much that she bought a new model as soon as it came out.

I recently picked up a Sony on sale at Wal-Mart and it works for me. Took forever for me to figure out how to get those free eBooks on my computer onto the Sony Reader, but once I figured it out, easy peasy now.

I'm not interested in a kindle device. I like the feel of an old-fashioned book in my hands. I like the look of the books on my bookshelf!

I would like one, but for now I like actually holding a book.

iPod, iPhone and iPad all have apps that are pretty nice, but I haven't downloaded one yet.

I am more than just a reader of books, I am a collector. Many miles have I driven to country towns to scour the shelves of second hand and antiquarian bookstores in search of the ever elusive first edition hardcover copy with its dust jacket still in pristine condition. Any electronic reading device would rob me of this pleasure.

That aside, a well stocked bookshelf in a person's home would attract my attention and inquisitive eye more than a Ming Dynasty vase would. Heaven forbid that filling a bookshelf with electronic reading devices will constitute a personal library in the future. Given the proper care and respect they deserve, a book should last many lifetimes. The oldest book in my collection is a collection of plays by Plautus published in the 17th century. Where it has been, and who has handled it in the past 400 years is probably a great story in itself. Kindles and the like will be landfill in a much shorter period of time.

I have a kindle for novels, and it is very useful and portable.
However, I also have over 4,500 books and bookshelves in every room. The front room is the library, with built in floor to ceiling bookcases. I love books, as does my husband. Unfortunately our tastes have very few areas in common, so the library will continue to expand. It does save on insulation. :)
There is room for both books and kindle in my life.

To be honest bloodandsand, I thought I sounded a bit pompous and pretentious, but I am passionate about books. Also, I hope people such as Jabberwok don't feel I'm being critical of them for owning such devices. I fully understand how they can be more convenient for some people and in certain situations, just not for me though.

I'm married to a book editor, he was critical enough and I survived! :D
It's just not an either/or situation for me, and it is so much easier to go on a trip now I'm not dragging a suitcase of books along with me.
We also have numerous old books, including several from the 1700s so I understood exactly what you mean. Not pompous or pretentious at all.

I love books - am horridly jealous of Jabberwok with those floor to ceiling bookshelves ;-)
When I moved Norway from England I managed to bring maybe a thousand books with me and had to get rid of a lot. That was tough. I still have books everywhere though, so its all good.
Love those books as I may, I also have a kindle and love that too. As others have said it is so good for travelling. Last year I took 14 books on a two week holiday, this year will be just a kindle. Yeay.

I have a Kindle. I don't have space for books at all, so this way I get to carry thousands in my pocket! (O.k., so I only have a few hundred items on it so far. :P) It's very convenient for me instead of having to carry many books around, and also means I can begin to read something on a whim more easily. I do still love having a physical book in my hands too and take them out the library whenever I go. :) The Kindle is pretty much only for my convenience of being able to store many books with no space, but it also helps that the books won't become destroyed or lost!

I don't have a Kindle, but do have the Kindle App for my iPad and I love it. Nothing beats the feel of a real book, but considering how avid a reader I am, and that I tend to reread books often, it's awesome to be able to pack one thing and have access to 300 books or more.

I have a Kindle Fire. My daughter gave it to me for Mothers Day...and i love it! I own hundreds of 'real' books - have a wall of bookshelves - but it's also nice to be able to carry many, many books with me. I get an e-mail every day that lists several dozen books that are the day's specials: FREE for that day only. So am already building quite a collection of books I might never have otherwise been exposed to.

I love my Kindle for another reason too. While I don't have 3g, I do have wireless service so am able to keep up with most of my internet activities while resting in bed - something I need to do a lot of lately.

But since this is a Literature discussion, I can definitely weigh in on that. I love the feel of a good solid book in my hands. I love how they look all lined up on their shelves. But I also love that the Kindle (and its free daily specials) are exposing me to books I might never have seen without it. And I love that the next time I have to be in the hospital (because realistically, there will be a next time), I can have dozens - or hundreds - of books with me to choose from!

I own a Kindle, but would rather read my much worn books. I do find the Kindle dictionary handy, it's much easier for me to search for words on such a lightweight device. Books will always prevail in this house!

I don't think I would want one because like others have said here, I like having real books. I have these really cool built in bookshelves in my home and they're filled with my book collection. If I had a Kindle, those shelves would be mighty empty! :(

I have a kindle and really enjoy it especially as I travel a fair bit. It's also cheaper to buy ebooks from Amazon.

That said, I prefer a real book as it isn't so easy to flick back a few pages to check some detail. I also like adding to my book collection and watching it evolve as my reading tastes change.

So jealous of those to have plenty of book storage, some of my shelves are 2 deep with books.

Got one, but don't use it. For some reason reading Kindle for any length of time made me feel nauseous (as if I am reading in a train or bus, which always had that effect). Reading an ordinary book other than when mobile, does not.

I got a Kindle Fire for Christmas this past year, and although I mostly use it for apps and internet, I've read a few novels on it as well. I think it's really handy and portable, and you can access all kinds of classics for free.
