LEG #1, CLUE #1 -- Geography -> Where on Earth?

Route Info

The race begins!

This journey through FunTrivia will take you to a number of different categories to test your creativity, your trivia know-how, and your teamwork. Heck, sometimes you'll even learn a bit about the site with little snippets of history and info-- it's like the real race! In fact, I guarantee you'll at least feel like a million bucks (or $250,000 in AUS).

For your first task, take your team to the Geography category, the first major category of the race, and just like real 'Amazing Racers', try to figure out 'Where On Earth?' you need to go! One team member must submit a quiz in the 'Where On Earth?' category for your team to receive its next clue.

All team members may collaborate on the effort, but only one may submit.

Bon voyage!

--------------

Teams approached their first task with gusto, immediately launching into the race with a 'Where on Earth' quiz. This category, enjoyed by many because of its mixtures of different question types and themes, would be a testing ground as teams got to know their strengths and weaknesses. While some teams approached this task by dividing up the work, others placed the instructions into the hands of one individual, opting to utilize their strengths instead. Nonetheless, ten enjoyable quizzes made their way through and teams received their next clue. The standings were as follows:

1. All Puns Intended [Pollucci19] - 'Amazing Sites' - http://www.funtrivia.com/trivia-quiz/Geography/Amazing-Sites-345130.html
2. The Trivia Chicks [Plodd] - 'Follow the Line' - http://www.funtrivia.com/trivia-quiz/Geography/Follow-the-Line-345135.html

*Due to a categorization issue, CLAP-21's quiz was originally placed online first, but in a different category. After the category was amended, they had fallen to fourth position overall.

LEG #1, CLUE #2 -- Geography -> Asian

Route Info

Congratulations on completing your first task in the race!

In August 2009, author Geniusonwheels instigated a quiz challenge in the newly-created Author's Lounge asking that players complete the FunTrivia globe by adding quizzes to fill in the missing countries of the Geography category. In 2010, the FunTrivia Bus Ride was introduced and submissions were spearheaded by Looney_Tunes. It's now played by hundreds of players every day.

It's time to join your fellow Bus Riders with a contribution, and to do so you'll need to continue your journey in Geography. Your next clue will be received when you make your way to any single Asian nation containing less than ten quizzes and add one to its total. Once again, all team members may collaborate on the effort, but only one may submit.

--------------

For their second task, many teams began with a shortlist of possible categories (of which there were more than twenty. By the end of the challenge, much against the odds, four had chosen to complete a quiz on Bhutan. While some teams received corrections, all teams prevailed, creating suitable quizzes for the 195 Day Bus Ride and culling the replacements list for future authors. The standings were as follows:

1. All Puns Intended [Tazman6619] - 'Bangladesh - Land of Rivers' - http://www.funtrivia.com/trivia-quiz/Geography/Bangladesh---Land-of-Rivers-345151.html
2. CLAP-21 [Looney_Tunes] - 'The Thunder Dragon Kingdom - Bhutan' - http://www.funtrivia.com/trivia-quiz/Geography/The-Thunder-Dragon-Kingdom---Bhutan-345184.html

LEG #1, CLUE #3 -- Geography -> Australia or Geography -> ?

Detour

A Detour is a choice between two different tasks, each with their own pros and cons. Some Detour tasks may prove to be better options for some teams depending on their strengths and weaknesses, but some options may also facilitate speedier or more creative results.
Only one of these quizzes needs to be completed.

In this Detour, your choices are:

Down Under - Create a quiz in the Australia category of Geography. This quiz must utilise an Author Challenge title. Thus, the player responsible for submitting the quiz must not have a challenge title active. Although many authors are from Australia, a team with many challenge titles active may find themselves caught up finishing or abandoning them first. Selecting a challenge title may also reduce your options.

Up Over - Create a quiz (in the Geography category) based on any location(s) above or near the Arctic Circle. If your quiz is about Northern Canada, for example, it may not contain questions about cities located below 60 degrees latitude, close to the boundary of the Arctic Circle. While this may restrict possibilities in terms of subject matter, any author on the team can create the quiz because it's not an Author's Challenge title. You may place it into any subcategory of Geography.

--------------

For their third task, teams encountered their first Detour of the race! Posed with the opportunity to write a challenge quiz about Australia or an open quiz about any location above sixty degrees north, a choice needed to be made quickly for teams to maintain leads and advance in the ranks. Surprisingly, submissions were split down the middle with many earlier teams choosing to go 'Down Under' and trailing teams opting to go 'Up Over' to make up time. All in all, the Detour created the perfect binary of quizzes.

Down Under
ICBS - Inter-Continental Ballistic Sheep [Eburge] - 'Picture Perfect' - http://www.funtrivia.com/trivia-quiz/Geography/Picture-Perfect-345279.html
CLAP-21 [Looney_Tunes] - 'The Big One' - http://www.funtrivia.com/trivia-quiz/Geography/The-Big-One-345257.html

4Pi [Leith90] - 'Love Letters to Europe' - http://www.funtrivia.com/trivia-quiz/Geography/Love-Letters-to-Europe-345283.html

Up Over

LEG #1, CLUE #4

Pit Stop

Congratulations! You've successfully made it to the first Pit Stop of the race!

Take a breather-- running around the world creating quizzes can take a lot out of you. Taking a sprint through FunTrivia's categories is a whole other story. Be proud though; it's not an easy race. And it's only just begun. smile

And just think-- you've conquered Geography. As a team, you've sampled only some of the possibilities of what this category has to offer. I wonder what else is in store for you in the next leg. Oh the places you'll go!

A huge thanks needs to be given to the Geography editors who did amazing work over the past eight days to ensure that the race quizzes made their way online. Exit10, Tizzabelle, Pagiedamon, and Spanishliz all made considerable efforts to clear out the queues.

Leg 2 of the race continues onward.

LEG #2, CLUE #1 -- Movies -> Quotes From Movies

    Route Info

It's time to leave the world of Geography.

Take a trip to Movies one of the most densely-populated categories on the site, and the most-played overall. When you arrive, take your seat and create a quiz in Quotes From Movies or any of its subcategories (eg. Movie Quotes Mixture, Who Said It?, etc.). As always, all team members may collaborate on the effort, but only one may submit.

Note: Pay close attention to category restrictions to avoid submitting duplicate questions! Movies has a guidelines page specifically about Restricted Quotes! There is also a quiz about Quotes Quizzes!
Oh, and don't call me Shirley.

As with recent movies, popularity is denoted by word of mouth. Your next clue will be received when your quiz receives 100 total plays. Most quiz totals are inflated, multiplied by three, to take into account guest plays. This is fine; as long as the number is 100 or more, your clue will arrive. Tell your friends!

    --------------

The three leading teams received a time credit at the commencement of the race's second leg and were sent along to the Movies category, specifically the 'Quotes in Movies' section. In a surprise gust, The Four Winds managed to take the lead coming out of the queue, securing not only the first slot out of the gate (without a time credit), but receiving their 100 plays just in time to hit the Sunday leisure rush on the homepage. This brought them from the last position on the board all the way up to the top! Talk about a headwind!
While many teams initially hit snags with their quotes quizzes, some of which needed small changes for plot summaries and some of which required overhauls, all ten teams produced excellent quizzes and met the 100 play goal in short time (though it felt like an eternity from their side). Some teams also managed to make up time by advertizing their quizzes in the Lounge, on their team boards, and via PM to friends. That'll do it!

LEG #2, CLUE #2 -- Movies -> Common Setting or Celebrities -> Movie Stars Mixed

Screen Time - Create a quiz in the Movies category consisting of ten questions, all with a common setting (time or place). The most ideal category for this would be Something in Common, but there is no restriction as to where your quiz can go.

Star Power - Create a quiz in the Celebrities category. Specifically, your quiz must be written and placed into the Movie Stars Mixed subcategory. For those more interested in the faces behind the camera rather than the films themselves, this option may be more to your liking.

    --------------

For this Detour task, teams were required to choose between a quiz in the Movies category and the Celebrities category, and unlike the first Detour of the race, many teams favoured one task much more than the other. Some of the cinephiles opting to take the task flew through with no issues, but one team in particular, originally in the lead, got caught up in a category with no link to the task at hand. Several standings flipped around in this task, but all-in-all, our movie-going groups fared well.

LEG #2, CLUE #3 -- Entertainment -> Entertainment By Themes

    Route Info

Are you ready to cross the border?!

There's a very fine line between the Movies category and many aspects of Entertainment, a much more hybridized part of FunTrivia consisting of everything from film to fashion to ferris wheels.

Over the years, Entertainment has undergone several overhauls because many of its subcategories fit so well alongside other categories on the site. These changes have created a very dynamic home for thousands of submissions.

For this task, one member must create a quiz in the category featuring the enclosed image--http://www.funtrivia.com/img/cattiny/7.gif. At least two questions must be about films. All team members may collaborate on the effort, but only one may submit.

The task may seem deceptively simple for an avid author, but remember, the best results usually come from a healthy balance of categories. Your quiz may go into any of the subcategories therein-- you just need to make sure they...well...follow the expectations of the category, otherwise the quiz may be moved to another, different category.

Please also keep in mind that a quiz simply about TV and Movies may be moved to the TV and Movies Mixture subcategory, which also has Something in Common.

    --------------

Another clue to throw off many of our racers, this third task of the leg featured two objectives. To begin, teams needed to move from the Movies category into Entertainment to search for a small Movie category clapper icon. This hint, disregarded by nearly half of the teams from the initial receiving of their clue, directed them to the 'Entertainment by Theme' section.
Once teams located their next destination, a quiz could be made in any subcategory therein. This resulted in a wide variety of themes consisting of questions about Movies, TV, Music, Video Games, Literature, and more. One team in particular, The Trivia Chicks, submitted a quiz to the wrong category, but rebounded with the first Editor's Choice quiz of the race! Congrats!

LEG #2, CLUE #4 -- Entertainment -> Entertainment By Decade

    Road Block

A Road Block is a task that only one member of the team can complete. Before you receive your next clue, please choose the team member who you would consider the Most Nostalgic. The participating team member will need to notify me via PM on the main site with to proceed.

Note: If any of your team members have yet to complete a race quiz, they must spearhead this one (and if you have more than one, it seems you'll have a choice).

    --------------

The selected team member received the following:

For this first Road Block task, you must complete a quiz in the 'Entertainment by Decade' section.

The decade selected must be the one in which you were born.

Suggestions may be made by others, but those who were not selected may not write questions or info; they may only provide suggestions.

    --------------

For teams' first Road Block, one member from each group was required to step up to the podium to write a quiz about their decade of birth. Oddly, much of the confusion from this task came from the PM requirement; the participating member needed to use the FunTrivia mail system to receive their next clue as opposed to the race-standard forum mail system. Although the some of the four teams who made this misstep barely faltered, some instances were costly. This, coupled with corrections and speedy writers produced dynamic shifts in the race roster and resulted in the fruitful additions featured below.
This first Road Block also required that racers who had yet to submit a race quiz automatically take the reins for the first time; it pays to spread the work! Five teams felt the brunt of this Road Block decision while the other five had the choice of who to send.

    Pit Stop

    STOP!
    ...in the name of love?
    ...Hammertime?
...right now, thank you very much?

Regardless of your era-of-choice, you should feel proud. You've reached the second Pit Stop of the race and you've earned your well-deserved rest period. Sit back, relax, and be entertained. Can you believe you've already made it to the third (maybe even fourth) category of your journey? With Geography, Movies, and Entertainment under your belt, the next category can only be a small step away. What do you think it will be?

    LEG #3, CLUE #1 -- Entertainment -> Beauty Accessories & Fashion

    Route Info

Before we head to our next category, you should probably dress for the occasion. Staying in the Entertainment category for now, you'll need to create a quiz in the Beauty Accessories & Fashion section (or any subcategory therein) and make sure you're all packed! All team members may collaborate on the effort, but only one may submit.
As soon as you're dressed and the quiz is prim, proper, and online, your team will receive its next clue.

CAUTION: Double U-Turn ahead! A Double U-Turn allows a team to select any other team to return to the upcoming Detour to complete the option they neglected to choose. If that team has already passed by the U-Turn, they are not affected by it. Further instructions will be given upon your arrival at this race mechanic; all you need to know is that staying ahead of the curve is the best chance at avoiding it.

Additional Note: The check-in order for this coming Pit Stop may have a very strong effect later in the race; please keep this in mind as you race along!

    --------------

The three leading race teams received a time credit at the beginning of Leg 3, boosting them a slight bit forward as they continued through the Entertainment category. For this task, many teams were surprised to see themselves tackling 'Beauty Accessories & Fashion', a niche topic unexpected by most. For this task, teams could approach it from any subcategory therein. Leading teams held onto their time advantage, submitting quickly and narrowly escaping certain earlier teams. Some teams' quizzes were submitted only two minutes apart from one another! It was that close. With promise of an upcoming party, teams dressed up and advanced onwards.

LEG #3, CLUE #2 -- People -> People by Country

    Route Info

Now that you're all dressed up, you have someplace to go!
You should be ready to make your way to a gathering (by invitation only) to the People category. Join the party by writing a quiz in the People by Country section and make sure that your quiz has a party theme-- any type of party you choose. Everyone's invited! Make sure that each member gives at least one question. It's time to mingle!

Note: Your quiz may not be submitted to U.S.A. People or U.K. People; neither could make it to the party.

    --------------

Moving into a new category for this leg of the race, teams needed to arrive at 'People' and write a mixed quiz with a 'By Country' twist. Restricted only by not being allowed to choose 'U.S.A.' and 'UK' for their country, teams chose a variety of different locales and brought their own spin on a party into the mix; all quizzes needed some sort of party theme.
But wait-- there was more. Each member of the team needed to contribute at least one question making it a fully collaborative effort. While some teams struggled with timing due to international time zones, others found convenience in a tightly-bound group. Nevertheless, all ten made it online in quick time.

LEG #3, CLUE #3 -- People -> Art World Figures or People -> Explorers

    Detour

A Detour is a choice between two different tasks, each with their own pros and cons. Some Detour tasks may prove to be better options for some teams depending on their strengths and weaknesses, but some options may also facilitate speedier or more creative results.
Only one of these quizzes needs to be completed.

In this Detour, your choices will depend on the type of company you choose to associate yourself with at the party in the People category. Your choice:

The Exploration of Art - Create a quiz in the Art World Figures category. Although this seems basic on the surface, keep in mind that most art-based quizzes appear in the Humanities category, so a quiz for People would have separate expectations. Make sure to read the guidelines carefully!
There is an added hitch! Only the first two teams to have a mixed artist quiz placed online will receive a clue-- other teams taking this option will need to write about one specific artist of their choice.

The Art of Exploration - Create a quiz in the Explorers category of People. This category is a bit less popular for new submissions than the other choice (Art World Figures) but has less blatant overlap with other categories. You may write about one specific explorer or a mixture of explorers; your call!

    --------------

For this Detour, racers needed to approach one of two interesting subcategories of the People section of FunTrivia: Art or Exploration. Opting to avoid the risk generated by the completion of a quiz in the 'Art World Figures' section, all ten teams decided to write quizzes about explorers. Surprisingly, all ten were very much different in subject matter, perhaps indicating the near-impossible replication of Bhutan-gate.

    LEG #3, CLUE #4

    Double U-Turn

You have arrived at the DOUBLE U-TURN.

If you choose, you may force another team to complete the other side of the Detour that they did not originally choose, thus expanding the breadth of information added to the site. If that team has already passed, the U-Turn will be ineffective.

Two teams may choose to use this U-Turn (as it is a Double) but a team may only use it once, and any team can not be U-Turned twice in one leg of the race. If a team is U-Turned, all teams passing by will know who has been selected and who did the deed.

    First come, first serve.

    --------------

Coming off the Detour, teams encountered their first U-Turn of the race, which requires affected teams to complete the alternate task of the Detour. It was imperative that teams arrive as soon as possible to avoid the wrath of this fierce race mechanic. While leading team All Puns Intended opted to avoid using the U-Turn, second place team ICBS utilized the option...and so did their victims. This resulted in a dynamic shift in the race's standings as some of the strongest competitors in the running were pushed out of the top three, losing their time credit for the following leg. But such is the race!

ICBS (Intercontinental Ballistic Sheep) U-Turned CLAP-21.

And look at that-- you've met tons of interesting people, learned about fashion sense (not that you needed it) and crossed into a total of four different categories on your race. Were any of them new to you?

    LEG #4, CLUE #1 -- ? -> ?

    Road Block

A Road Block is a task that only one member of the team can complete. Before you receive your next clue, please choose the team member who you would consider the Most Spontaneous. The participating team member will need to notify me via PM on the main site with to proceed.

    --------------

The selected team member received the following:

The FunTrivia Author Challenge list opened in the weeks after the Author's Lounge, and the popularity it generated created a massive surge of quizzes across all categories. Not only did it encourage newer authors to join in the fun, it motivated prolific authors to stretch far beyond their comfort zones.

In the Author's Lounge, 'Stepping Up' is a recurring challenge created to cull the bottom titles off the listing as they've been piling up since the inception of the challenges.

For this task, the selected teammate must choose the longest-standing title...the one at the bottom of the listing. You may wait and hope for a more desirable title to claim (if one seems to be lined up for it) but remember, the longer you wait, the further back you'll fall!

You may write it into any category you choose, but be careful. Some categories will have longer wait times, so it's up to you as to what type of quiz you want to create!

Only four categories are off-limits: Animals, Brain Teasers, Sci/Tech, and Sports.

    --------------

Beginning this fourth leg with a Road Block was a surprise for many racers, all of whom had to choose one member to be spontaneous. Sure enough, spontaneity was the key-- that member needed to drop everything to complete the challenge title they found at the bottom of the Author's Challenges listing. In some cases, this meant dropping their earlier in-progress titles.
Working on the fly, the selected member needed to go it alone to create and fit the quiz one of sixteen available categories, each of which would have different wait times. While some jetted ahead by creating and submitting in relatively quick categories, a handful of participants inadvertently chose a category with a longer wait.
The earlier they arrived at the Pit Stop in Leg 3, the more time they would have not only to wait for and choose a title, but the more time they'd have to work and submit to what could be a lengthy queue.

    LEG #4, CLUE #2 -- Music

    Route Info

It's time to play things to the tune of a different...erm...tune. Let's try Music this leg of the race. One of the more popular categories of FunTrivia, Music receives one of the largest proportions of first-time authors; it's an attractive category home to a wealth of knowledge and a great breadth of material from all around the world. Music is, after all, a universal language.

For this task, your team must agree upon one band or artist and write a quiz about them-- any band or artist. The choice is yours!

Oh-- and they can't have 10 quizzes (or more) already online. Remember-- Music contains breadth. Wouldn't want to oversaturate. ;)

    --------------

With a blindsiding first clue sending teams all over FunTrivia, a stay in Music would be enough to stabilize teams once more. For this task, a quiz needed to be written about any band or musician to take the team's fancy, but that artist/group needed to have less than ten quizzes online already. While some teams went for old favourites, some tries something new. Nonetheless, some teams were able to gain ground in a comfortable category while some struggled with timing issues.

LEG #4, CLUE #3 -- Music -> Lyrics Mixture/Something in Common or Music -> Musical Instruments

    Detour

A Detour is a choice between two different tasks, each with their own pros and cons. Some Detour tasks may prove to be better options for some teams depending on their strengths and weaknesses, but some options may also facilitate speedier or more creative results.
Only one of these quizzes needs to be completed.

Vocals - You must write a fifteen question quiz consisting of lyrics; each question must be lyrics-based and it can go into either the Lyrics Mixture or Something in Common subcategories of Music. While this quiz may be easier for the everyday author, a longer quiz will likely take more time to write.

Instrumental - For this task, you must write a quiz in the Musical Instruments category of Music. It can be about a single instrument or multiple different instruments. Your call! The quiz only needs to be ten questions in length.

    --------------

Hitting the Detour for this fourth leg of the race, teams were required to choose one of two different aspects of music: Vocals or Instrumental. For the former task, which could have been easier to research for music-lovers and occasional listeners alike, teams needed to weigh out the difficulty of writing an additional five questions. The latter was much more straightforward and granted more freedom, but would the technical aspect of the instruments stop teams in their tracks?
