Subject: EDQ #12 - Making a Quiz List

Terry recently added this new feature, and I have seen a lot of quizzes that I feel would benefit from being compiled into a list, but whose authors do not seem to be aware of this option. So this latest addition to the series of Editors Discussing Quizzes is to draw your attention to a way to get more plays for some of your quizzes!

All authors can set up a collection of their quizzes, called a quiz list. (Gold members may include quizzes by other authors in the lists.) When a quiz is part of a quiz list, players will see a message at the end of the quiz, just before the place where they can rate it, telling them that it is part of a list, and providing a link to that list (or multiple links, if it is included in more than one list). This makes it much easier for them to find the related quizzes to one they enjoyed than is the case if they have to search through your profile's list of quizzes (which are in order of ranking or date online or number of plays) or trying to locate them in the category where they may be mixed with a lot of others. Some may even be in different categories, which could lead to them not being found.

To set up a quiz list, you need to go to Quiz Lists Home - it is the second entry on the dropdown menu for Quizzes. If you don't have dropdown menus operating, this link will take you there:

link http://www.funtrivia.com/lists/

On that screen, you will see a display of the most recently-created Quiz Lists, which you might like to explore to see how others have used the facility. On the left, there is a list of categories - if a list has been linked with a specific category, it will be shown when you click the link there. As you set up your list, it is worth including the category if it is relevant. Most of my lists are mixed categories, because the connecting link is something like Commission titles, not a common subject matter.

Near the top left is a link that says Create New List / Edit - if you click it, you will be taken to the page where you can set up and manage your quiz lists. (I placed a link to that page in my Favourites bar, but it isn't that hard to get back using these steps.) There you will see your quiz lists displayed, along with links to edit each, and make it visible to players or hidden (only useful if it is still preliminary - there's not much point having a list nobody can see).

Near the top of that page is a link that says Create a New Quiz List. It will take you to the place where you set up your list. From there, the steps are pretty clear. One hint is that it is much faster if you know the number of the quiz you want to add - selecting by name starts a search function that takes a while, and offers you multiple similar titles from which to choose, so you can be sure you have the right one. If you enter the quiz number, it just goes right in. To find its number, open it to play look at the top of the first screen. Under the title and the category, and above your player name, you will see the Quiz #, number of questions, and difficulty rating. Copy and paste is the fastest way to be sure you get it right! I find it convenient to have two windows open, so I can flick back and forth.

Once you have added all the quizzes you want, you can sort them into the desired order, then make the list visible. You can come back later to add or remove quizzes from the list as you wish.

When you have set up one or more quiz lists, you will see them listed on your profile page, on the tab that says Quiz Lists (currently the one on the right of the set of tabs to select Info, Badges, Mini, Quizzes, Crosswords, Challenges, Expert, Quiz Lists).

The Quiz List is indeed a marvelous feature.

To add a quiz to a list, you may introduce either the title or the quiz number. But as titles may be the same for different quizzes, the best way to address the correct quiz is by the (unique) number.

I made my first list! I had a bit of trouble at first, because I didn't notice the quiz name come up under the box and thought I was doing it wrong.

I'm assuming that we can continue to add relevant quizzes to a list later. I'm doing a series but only have two of them done (4 years apart) after a long break. I hope some of my little orphaned quizzes at the bottom of the ranks get some play. Happy about this new wrinkle in our dear Fun Trivia website.

Your quiz list is dynamic, nannywoo. You can indeed add new ones, you can change your mind and remove one or more, and you can shuffle their order in any way that suits. I chose to make mine all chronological, but that's just me. You might want to move quizzes you really feel deserve more attention up to the top, where players who are just exploring will see them first, for example.

Can you add a quiz before it goes online but it just wouldn't appear until it goes up? I have a few lists set up and it seems like this would be an easier step for me (and I guess others) so players who take a quiz right after it goes up can see the list.

Another question I have is if there could be a feature added where we can follow quiz lists like gold members can follow categories and get notifications when new quizzes are added.

I like the idea of being able to follow a particular list or getting notifications when a new one is added to it.

As it is set up, the quiz must be online before it can be added to a quiz list. I can appreciate that it might be nice for the newest quizzes to be on the list instantly when they go online, but my tactic is to simply keep my eye out for the online message, and go add it immediately, even before I send a message of thanks to the editor who placed it online. However, this might well involve some significant restructuring of the way quizzes are listed - and only Terry would know exactly how difficult it might be.

Any suggestions for improving the feature need to be posted in the Quiz Authoring and/or Feedback threads in the FT Discussion Forums. It is something only Terry can address, and only he can judge whether it is worth the effort on his part - there are a lot of factors to consider in making changes to a website! Since he rarely looks in here, your suggestions might never reach him if posted here.

How long does it take a list to be added to the list, please?

Is there a limit to the number of quizzes in a list?

Nothing has been said. One of mine is 66, and several are close to 50.

I have a quiz with the one-word title "Ur" - maybe allowed online with that title by mistake, since it can't be found with a quiz search, either. When I try to add this quiz to a list, I get a list of quizzes with words that have "ur" in them. My one-word title doesn't appear in that list. Neither does another quiz I wrote that is also about the city of Ur (no problem with getting that one on a list, because I can paste in the whole name of the quiz). Anyway, I don't think the word "Ur" is in Fun Trivia's dictionary.

For some reason, when I try to add a quiz by pasting its number into the box, nothing comes up (not just with this quiz). I can't figure out how to do it that way. I've tried with and without the # sign. I'm feeling obtuse! Sorry.

Any ideas?

I have had no trouble posting with the number - just the digits found at the end of the quiz's identification - but you have to leave the name field blankl, just enter the number. The name search is sometimes a problem because it tries to be helpful and offer you a list of all the things it thinks you might want - but may miss the one you really do want!

From your list of quizzes, it seems to be quiz 358908 - if you enter those digits in the quiz ID box, it ought to work.

Thank you! When I pasted in the number, the quiz automatically appeared at the bottom of the list rather than the word ADD coming up. I may have been missing it before.

If you are thinking of setting up lists and interested in getting them played by people in search of the recently-added Quiz List badges, it is worth noting that players need to complete all of the quizzes in a list in order to score it. This means that you will get more play with shorter lists. Sometimes they need to be long - a series that uses the 26 letters of the alphabet makes more sense, at least to me, as a single list rather than several shorter ones. Sometimes, however, you might see a different way of grouping them to make a couple of shorter lists, and (as long as there are at least 5 in each list) make them more attractive for badge-hunters.

When I just played FatherSteve's latest entry in the Sidekicks Series, and saw that the Quis List had 26 entries, even though we are only part way through the alphabet, I realised that you can actually add a quiz to your list as soon as you have set up a template! This is exciting when you are planning a series, as it will appear as part of your list as soon as it goes online.

I may be the last author to work this out, but in case it is useful for anyone else, here is how to do it.

When you have set up your template, take note of its number (which will appear at the top of the template, after the title). Got to Quiz Lists Home, and select the link for Create New/Edit. Select Edit: [the list to which you want to add this one], enter its number in the Quiz ID box, and click Go. Your quiz now appears at the bottom of the quiz list, and players will see it, but (of course) not be able to play it until it actually goes online.

Oh that is convenient. This way players can see your other quizzes on the list right away in case they play as soon as it goes on but you don't see that until hours later.

I wonder if everybody understands that they need to play all the quizzes in the list, to get the badge?

I've made a couple of lists in the last few days, and notice that those quizzes get quite a bit of play in the day or so after the list goes live. However, hardly anyone has played ALL the quizzes in any one of the lists. They usually play five, but most of my lists are not exactly five quizzes long.

Anyone else noticed this?

I have, I just assumed that those players must have already played the other ones in the list at some point previously.

I've been going through and finishing lists where I've only got a few more to do to be able to claim them.
