Subject: 100 Nouns (3) - COMPLETE

Posted by: trident

Round 3 of 100 Nouns has arrived!

Here's a reminder on how the game works:

I will give two lists, each with 50 items. The first list will contain generic nouns that might be pretty easy to work into a question in many different ways. These would be words like clock, strawberry, or heart. The second list has much more specific words that are likely going to have to be directly about that topic (unless you can find an inventive way to make them about something else). This list would include things like Mount Kilimanjaro, Ulysses S. Grant, and barometric pressure. Some of the entries on this second list will be something you might need to research a little!

Authors must choose a word from each list, one generic and one specific, and write one question about each. Once you claim a word from a list, it is no longer available for other players to claim it. All nouns eventually have to be claimed before the series can end. Once you have written your two questions and submitted them to the queue, you are free to choose two more. It might be good manners not to keep choosing too many in a row too quickly, allowing others a chance at the list. Submitting and claiming words will mostly be on the honor system. You must submit the two questions to the queue before claiming any more. I will occasionally be checking the queue to make sure authors are actually submitting questions with their chosen nouns. Happy single questioning!

After some discussion with my fellow editors, we have established some more thorough rules to make the game run smoother. Please read them below:

1. Players may not have any remaining word pairs outstanding from the previous round if they want to claim any words this round. Word pairs from the previous round should be submitted to the queue before claiming any here.

2. In order to give everyone a fair shake at the word pairs, we are only allowing individual players to claim four word pairs per round. If many words have been sitting around unclaimed for a while (think 3-4 weeks), then we will open the round back up to everyone.

3. There will be no switching of words or word pairs of any kind. If you have decided to claim a word pair, please stick with it and submit it to the queue. If you absolutely cannot complete your word pair, it will be put back onto the word list and you may not complete any more word pairs for that round.

Happy single questioning!

"I am kinda waiting Trident hasn't opened up the round for everybody. Only four pairs left. Trident did that for Round 2 when only three pairs are left, if my memory is correct."

The rules as posted above say: In order to give everyone a fair shake at the word pairs, we are only allowing individual players to claim four word pairs per round. If many words have been sitting around unclaimed for a while (think 3-4 weeks), then we will open the round back up to everyone."

We are in no rush. If players don't claim the last few pairs in the next week or so, I will open up the round again.

No rush, Trident. My point was in reply to FatherSteve that even if nobody else claims one particular pair, I will claim it! :-)

Wait, I am in a rush! I just started this game and I'm addicted already. I'm checking several times a day to see if you started a new round.

And I'm so curious what is going to happen with the fascinating (?!) oligodynamic. I'm imagine, Looney, you could do an entire quiz as well, right? What are the rules about single questions and quizzes on the same topic?

Anyway that's just me. I can stand two weeks wait, if I must.

I am glad some of us are learning about the oligodynamic effect because I find it quite interesting as well!

Godwit, you came with limited choices for this round, but you will get a lot more options when the new round comes out. Thanks for joining!

My 2nd pair then--I'll take doe, and The False Mirror.

Unless someone else has been patiently waiting and hoping?

Doe is in animals. I was startled to see almost my exact question word for word already there! So I had to get more creative.

Also a note on technical: I see that if I write the question and then click Next without choosing a category (as I often do), I get a message to go back and choose a category. However I can only go back to the Homepage, therefore I lose my question.

If you hit the "Back" button in your browser it should bring you back to your question. That has happened to me many times, but when I hit "Back", the question is always there.

So Godwit what was the question that was there word-by-word?

Something like "Doe a deer a female deer"...what other animal is called a doe?

Okay thanks Lpez, so, I had a glitz of some kind.
Maybe that "identical" question is mine!?
I got only a "homepage" link option on the "Go back and enter category" page, went to homepage, went back to single question page, and the question was gone. Entered it again, with category, but a near identical question was already listed...so went back to single question page and created a new one.

Sounds like a poltergeist zipped in there?

needs delete the Doe a deer question as I never entered info or category for it.

Too bad, if it is mine, it was a cute question.

Dear editors (mainly to Trident and Agony),

Due to 100 Words, I have really got the flow of writing single questions, and I have written many questions. I have a doubt. What kind of questions can be set in General? General quizzes can be mixed bag, theme based, connected by some colors, 9 for 10, and so on. But the single questions page says that General questions are questions regarding random tidbits and facts. But don't such questions fall in some other particular category already? Which questions then qualify for General? Till date, I have only one General question, which was about the catalytic converter.

Thanks,
Angikar

Dear editors, (especially Kyle and eburge and Trident),

I remember seeing in some forum why FunTrivia doesn't accept single questions for Video Games. Kyle said that there are players who rate Video Games questions very low, even if they are not too specific knowledge and are part of general pop culture. Video games are also not part of Global Challenge, if I correctly remember. Isn't it time to change this? Simple questions, which ask only about the genre of the video game, or where the video game is set, are definitely more likely to be known than many of the single questions accepted. Example:
Which of these video games, released by Naughty Dog, is set in post-apocalyptic USA, and features escorting a girl, while surviving against cannibals?
Answer) The Last of Us
I mean, I haven't written any quiz in Video Games so far. Globetrotter did enable me to explore many categories (thanks, Kyle). I do prefer writing single questions on an absolutely new topic before writing quizzes. I recently wrote my first Celebrities single question.
So, yeah, I made up the question just now. It definitely doesn't ask specifics like, "What was the gun used when battling so-and-so level? " So, can these questions be submitted in General?

Thanks,
Angikar

The fast and easy answer to your question about the General category is that if the question can reasonably fit in some other category, it does not belong in General.

I'd estimate that about 70% of single question submissions to General are moved to a different category.

Yes, I agree with agony. Many questions sent there are re-categorized. I wouldn't necessarily try to write a General single question on purpose, but submit there if you find yourself not being able to categorize it elsewhere.

There are a few types of questions that we see from time to time there, such as "What would you do with such and such object?"

VG single questions have been allowed to be submitted to the Entertainment category since the start of the game, but there are severely high expectations for them.

I noticed some 100 Nouns in the Top 20 questions this week for the New Question Game. Nice work!
