Subject: Three Little Letters [2] - COMPLETE

Posted by: 1nn1
Date: Aug 24 20

This was a popular challenge when it was run in July 2019. From your feedback the game has been improved. This time there are two tiers (or levels of difficulty). If you would like to play, you will be given a packet of letters groupings. Your task is to make those groupings into words and then incorporate those words into a crossword. Simple isn't it? Here is the fine print:

Tier 1
You will be need to incorporate 10/12 of your letter groupings into a small crossword or all 12 in a medium crossword. Large crosswords are off the table this time. Besides using the letters in the exact sequence, the three letter sequences come with hyphens to indicate further instructions - :
  • Hyphen at the end means you must start the word with the given letter grouping (ie word must be four or more characters).
  • Hyphen at the start means you must end the word with the given letter grouping (ie word must be four or more characters)
  • Hyphens either end mean you must have at least one letter either side of the word with the given letter grouping. (ie word must be five or more characters)
  • No hyphens means you are free to place the letter wherever you want within your chosen word or use the letter grouping as a three letter word if it can used. (ie minimum of three letters)
  • A three letter grouping can be split to form two or more words within the grouping as long as the only item separating the three letters is a space or an apostrophe.

    Tier 2
There are no three letter groupings. Instead there are 14 four letter groupings. You must make at least 12 of these groupings into words to be placed into a medium (not small or large) crossword. You get bragging rights if you get all 14 placed. To offset the difficultly, none of the four letter groupings have pesky little hyphens connected to them but only four of the 14 can remain as four letter words.

Additional requirements (Tier 1 and Tier 2)
    1. There are no restrictions on categories.
    2. Your crossword must be symmetrical.
    3. No two letter words are allowed this time, sorry.
    4. Small crosswords must have at least one six letter word; medium crosswords must have at least one word with at least eight letters.
    5. Two pairs of words made from listed groupings must cross each other in the crossword.

    Submitting your Crossword
As you can appreciate, there will be an extra layer of editing involved. Editing of crosswords is already a lengthy process. We really need you to do the following to minimise the extra time needed to edit these challenge crosswords. If you do not add this extra requirement, we will need to send this back unedited for you to add these required details. Thanks!

Using the "Option - Note to Editor" box, please list the following:
    1. Please list your packet number.
    2. The position number of each letter grouping, the letter grouping (in capitals) and the rest of the word in lower case (eg for the letter group AND: "23D hAND"_ Repeat for each letter grouping used.
    3. The two pair of words that cross (eg [11D & 17A] , [23A & 25D]).
    4. Any groupings you did not use.

    How to participate:
Players who did not undertake the corresponding challenge last year can start at Tier 1. Those who did, start at Tier 2 (These authors were Leith90, Bernie73, CmdrK, Pollucci19, Jennifer5, Creedy, Moonraker2 and Zorba_Scank). Authors with 25 crosswords published on FT can elect to start at Tier 2.

After you have submitted your first CW, you can request another but it will be at the next tier up. (If you start on Tier 2, submit it, and want another, we have a very special requirement in store for you).

All word groupings were tested to ensure there were adequate numbers of words for each grouping. However because of the time to develop and test the groupings, there are a finite number of packets. (Tier 1 - 24; Tier 2 - 16).

Your package of letter groupings will be sent to you by PM ASAP. All you need to do, is request one in the thread below. Please indicate which tier (that is, if you have this option) you would like.

Thank you for organising and managing this challenge.

Any chance I could have a crack at Tier 2?

The other CW editors have no objections to me participating. As I initially constructed a Tier 2 CW to prove Proof of Concept, I had better take Tier 2+

Packets 33,34 have been sent to VK and psnz, respectively. (Both Tier 2)

Tier 2 stops at Packet 40.

1nn1 said .... Moonraker2 has also been provided with a word list for Tier 2+. This person is very brave. Don't expect to hear from Moonraker2 for a while. He is going to be busy and more than a little worried.

Just to allay any fears for my wellbeing, I was able to submit above mentioned challenge yesterday, but admit it was one hell of a struggle!

Good to see you cam out of it unscathed. If you found it difficult, then no-one else is going to find Tier2+ easy.

If perchance there are any unclaimed packets for Tier 2 at the 'end of the day' I'd be more than happy to go again.

Oh, well, everyone is having so much fun, I might as well claim a packet while there are still some left. 1nn1, please send me a Tier 2 packet. Who needs a social life for the next couple of months? :)

I was going to wait until my CW went online, but since the packets are going 'like hotcakes' (to quote 1nn1) I'd better get in for my chop now.

    Can I have a Tier 2+ please?

Mine has been submitted 1nn1. As with Moonraker, I too wish to allay any fears... apart from having a shave this morning, no hair was harmed in the creation of this puzzle.

"If perchance there are any unclaimed packets for Tier 2 at the 'end of the day' I'd be more than happy to go again."

Love your enthusiasm moonraker2, but we want to let as many people participate as possible. Surprisingly some people are starting at Tier 2 and they are almost exhausted. Let's leave it a few more days and see if they are collared.
Tier 1, there are plenty left but after you successfully navigated through Tier 2+, anything less might be anticlimactic...
However I have a sinister plan if we run out of Tier 2 but we have some Tier ones left.

(I thought Pollucci19 was a female. After reading that this player had a shave this morning, I think now that Pollucci is a hirsute female)

Crossword submitted. It was exhausting. Had to scrap it several times and start again because I couldn't get it symmetrical.

    Moonraker, you're punch drunk!
