Zimbabwe, officially the Republic of Zimbabwe, is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. The capital and largest city is Harare, and the second largest is Bulawayo. It is a country of roughly 15 million people. The Bantu people (who would become the ethnic Shona) built the city-state of Great Zimbabwe; the city-state became one of the major African trade centres by the 11th century dealing in gold, ivory and cooper. Zimbabwe gained full independence in April 1980 when the first elections were held. Reply #61. May 10 23, 9:46 AM |

A flitch is a side of bacon. The town of Great Dunmow in Essex, England, holds four-yearly "Flitch Trials". Couples convincing a panel of bachelors and spinsters that they never regretted marrying (over the past 366 days) win a flitch of bacon. These "Flitch Trials" are mentioned in Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" and were also part of the 1952 film, "Made in Heaven". Reply #67. May 23 23, 6:41 PM |

The hairy-nosed wombat differs taxinomically from the common wombat. It has silkier fur, broader nose (yes, with hair) and longer ears. Just two species, northern and southern, make up the hairy-nosed genus. This marsupial is known to some on FT as the animal which produces cube shaped feces. This odd trait is due to the elastic properties at the end of its large intestine. With poor eyesight, these diggers must depend on their noses to find food. Native grasses are their favorite.
