Subject: RIP Tabby Tom

Posted by: baldricksmum

I'd like to post a tribute to Tom who died in December and whose funeral will be next Wednesday, 1st February. Tom was an active and enthusiastic member of this site for many years and was also a Moderator on the Forums. I think he was a remarkable man, with an extensive knowledge of many diverse subjects. A group of us would meet online three times a week for informal quizzes/chats. Tom would host the Wednesday night quiz and his questions were always fun and interesting. I'll miss his gentle sense of humour and descriptions of the favourite red wine or single malt whisky he was drinking that night. One of the blessings of this site is that many good friendships can be made, one of the curses is when friends just disappear and we don't know why, I didn't want that to happen with Tom. Tom contributed to the Forum members interviews in 2009 link https://www.funtrivia.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/497211#Post497211

Thank you for your post, baldricksmum. I was one of the chat quiz regulars as well, for many years. Tom’s quizzes were always interesting and informative, and the knowledge he displayed when answering questions from other setters was awesome. We were lucky enough to meet in person on one occasion, and I will always be grateful for that. FunTrivia was a hugely important part of his life, and the friendships he made on here were very important to him as they are to many of us. He will not be forgotten.

Tom was a true gentleman and one of the nicest people I have had the pleasure to meet. His passing has hit us all very hard. His knowledge on so many topics never ceased to amaze me. We will especially miss him during our online quizzes. He hosted many times and I would rush home to make sure I never missed any he hosted. Rest in peace, my friend. We talk about you all the time. Your memory will be with us forever.

I was sometimes moved to send rather gawky complimentary notes to TabbyTom on the subject of his excellent and very knowledgable quizzes. He invariably replied promptly with wise and modest words of thanks. I very much wish I had had the chance to meet him in person.

I was another who was fortunate enough to meet Tom in person, a group of met up in London when an Australian member was visiting.

He was a lovely man and he will be missed by many at Funtrivia.

RIP Tom.

Though I never had the opportunity to interact with Tom, I have often played and enjoyed his quizzes. Every time I hear of the passing of a fellow FT member - especially someone who gave so much to this site - I feel deeply saddened, because it is like losing a family member. My thoughts go to his family and friends, wishing them comfort and peace.

Thanks for posting the link to the interview and once again, I'm so glad we have these here. Except that I read that he'd mentioned my name which meant I just lost it. He really was a gentleman and very humble as only a true gentleman is. He could do the erudite quizzes but could take American sports quizzes and I don't recall him ever complaining about it being obscure to him. He would just do it for the fun. We could all take a lesson from him about being gracious.

I have always felt as though this site was family and a consistent presence in my life and I got that same impression from him.
The various smaller groups he was in all knew him as a congenial person who was always up for a quiz. It did not make much difference what it was. In our group, he would always be there consistently scoring on the daily quizzes.

I once personally asked him for advice on a question once because while living in France and facing yet another typical French educational system thing where they claim to know more about English than any native speaker born anywhere and if any native speaker has the audacity to question this, they'll tell you it's normal that YOU would say this as you did attend Oxford or Cambridge. I'm fairly certain he did in fact attend one of these, the former I believe but it made very little difference in the way in which he related to others. I gave an example of something silly that had been marked on my thirteen year old child's English paper because they had to find something 'wrong' with it and docked her a point for where she'd placed a preposition. He confirmed my opinion that it would depend on who was writing, not the place of birth of the person writing the sentence, nor did it have anything to do with where that person had studied. I know it seems very silly now, but the constant barrage of silliness for the many years of living there got to me. He was so kind to me.

His knowledge of things was astounding but like the true gentleman he was, he didn't spread it around like jam to borrow a French expression. I think we often asked him about Latin questions.

I'm not at all certain I read the interview until today though it has been a long time. Thanks for putting the link in as it made him seem so close and contented with the way things were.

Maybe he'll get to see his beloved cat up there. Tom, thanks so much for being such a good friend to us.

I just played some of Tom's quizzes, from there I can see he also was fond of Alexandre Dumas! If you look at my author page you can see that I wrote quite a bit about Dumas. If only I could have met Tom, a fellow Dumas fan.

So sorry to hear this news. Although I did not know him to chat to he would often play duels at the same time as I did and would be paired together on a regular basis. He was a bit of a nemesis for me and probably beat me more times than I did him. He will definitely be missed on this site. RIP

I am also one of the online quiz group and shall miss Tom's humble intelligence and vast general knowledge. I met him on one occasion and he was indeed a gentleman.

Have played quizzes with Tom for years. I have never heard him say a nasty word (ok maybe about modern music). He was so knowledgeable and eager to help others to understand. I wish I could have met him in person to explore other aspects of his personality. Tom loved to learn and explore, what a dream it would have been, for American me, to explore London with Tom. RIP Tom, you will be missed.

I sent a message to Tom about his avatar when I fsaw it years ago. He was surprised I knew what breed of cat it was. I told him the Bronx Zoo had various wild cats in native habitat exhibits. He saw I am on the Cat People Team and asked about my cats. Whenever a new cat avatar was spotted on FT, we would chat about it. I didn't know as others here did. But I did enjoy our conversations.
