Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, George Carlin, Jim Gaffigan, Conan O'brien (his stand-up is awful, but his skits and banter are hilarious), Jimmy Kimmel, Lewis Black, DL Hughley.

Nobody mentioned the "Kings" of late-nite: Leno & Letterman. Anyone like them or are they the obvious choices?

Subject: Modern Comedians
Date: Feb 25 08

I was recently watching a comedian on the channnel Comedy Central, and I have to admit, I found nothing funny at all about his jokes.

They were sexual, crude, and disgusting jokes. He also bashed on religion like a maniac, on homosexuals, on women, and on physically and mentally disabled people.

I then watched another who did almost exactly the same thing except in a different order, with the added bonus of being insulted personally. He made fun of the Islamic and Catholic religions, and completely disrespected Pope John Paul II, and the most important Islamic prophet, Muhammad.

But for some reason the entire crowd thought that it was hilarious, clapped when he joked about the late Pope passing away, and gave him a standing ovation when he talked about Muslims being killed in the Middle East. (That is not an exaggeration.)

As a question.

Are there any good comedians left?

wwiivarn If you hold anything sacred at all, I suggest you do not watch a comedian, because you are almost guranteed to be insulted/personally attacked.

After a particulary horrible joke about how the Catholic Church turned the death of the pope into a carnival (his words) and audience member left. He then started insulting the person, calling him stuck up, and asking if he could take a joke. The crowd supported him the whole way of course.

Who was the comedian?

I don't know if it is just modern comedians, I think this person was just a bad comedian who had to resort to the basest comedy to try and get a laugh, very unoriginal.

lesley153 Dylan Moran, Bill Bailey, Jo Brand, are funny without being insulting. (Patrick Kielty is insulting and not funny, Shappi Khorsandi is not insulting and not funny.) Do tell us who you were watching.

crazycube That Iranian guy who is always in the Royal Variety show is not funny, neither is Al Murray.

Really like Patrick Keilty - who is not afraid to speak his mind.

Peter Kay and David Walliams are also very funny. Comedians have always poked fun at the establishment - goes with the territory. If you don't like what they are saying do the obvious - change the channels or hit the "off" switch.

I like comedians who do observational humour. One of my favourites is Canadian Derek Edwards who can make something funny out of the most ordinary happenings. I'm also very fond of Stephen Wright who does brilliant one-liners like "You can't have everything. Where would you put it?" Cracks me up!

lesley153 Cube, "that Iranian guy" is Omid Djalili - not difficult to find. He did a beautiful cameo in "Black Books" and some lovely stand-up stuff, but then he ran out of material. Shame. I'd like to see him with something fresh, because I think he's good. Just a bit stale at the moment.

I'm really bumping this up for Seamus to identify the performer who upset him so much, so we can make a point of avoiding him. But maybe we won't need to try hard - after all, he's not on mainstream terrestrial TV; he is on a pretty obscure channel. It does sound like he deserves to stay there.

i always expect that behaviour in comedians and i dont take it personally, otherwise i wouldnt go (live comedians). Many jokes are sexist too. I think they just say what the rest of us are thinking.

That's the trouble with a lot of stand up comedians Lesley. They spend ages touring the clubs with virtually the same act. Once they do a couple of TV shows they've used up all their material.

I find that modern comedians tend to go for the shock factor - lots of swearing and crudity. I've nothing against that, but they seem to forget to be funny at the same time.

One of the best stand up comedians I've ever seen live is Ken Dodd. I was dragooned into going as I could only visualise the Diddy Men and I really didn't think it'd be my cup of tea.

I also like Victoria Wood. We're the same sort of age and her topics always strike a chord with me. My oldest daughter thinks Russel Brand is hilarious but he just reminds me of a naughty child running around shouting "bum" just to get a reaction.

wwiivarn I really can't remember the name of the comedian, but I do remember that he was on Comedy Central. I was staying in Florida, and turned to a random channel, and he was on it.

He is definetly one to be avoided. I watched for a total duration of seven minutes. I tried to give his material a chance.

lesley153 Sally - yes! That's exactly how I see Brand. Donny Tourette too. Nice boys, pretending to be a bit rude. Sweet. :)

I have tried hard not to like Russell Brand, but he always makes me laugh - even s.m.w. breaks into a smile. I know his lifestyle choices are a bit bizarre, but he is obviously very bright bunny indeed. Loved his biography once it was reduced in price in Sainsburys. Yep agree about Victoria Wood - different league and magic when she is with Julie Walters (both of whom should be dames in my book).

Remember the good ole days when comedians like Bill Cosby could stand on a stage and tell everyday funny stories which would actually make people belly laugh? I do not recall him ever cursing, slamming any race or religion...he just told human stories that were funny. I guess those days are over.

I miss the likes of Bill Cosby and Billy Connolly (is it something in a name?) - those guys were funny.

I like the comedians who make fun of themselves - guys like Jeff Foxworthy (he's making fun of my momma, but hey, she's probably his momma too!) - they poke fun at their own situations.

If you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at, eh?

cheekymunkysm I like Noel Fielding because he's funny by being completely random. :D He doesn't usually insult people-not in a nasty way. He did once but that was because someone in the audience was shouting things at him and trying to start an argument.

WW - This is silly. How can anyone give their opinion about a comedian you saw when no one knows his name? You have me intrigued!

RioBR Unfortunately, I don´t know any from around the workd, because I really don´t see them on TV or I am not used to watch comedy shows in other languages, as it is difficult to understand. But, in Brazil, we have several comedians for children and they are really nice like Renato Aragão and Tom Cavalcante. There are also two others, Heloísa Perrissée and Ingrid Guimarães; they have just clen jokes and no offences to anyone (and we love them a lot, laughing all the time).
