Weather in Movies Trivia Questions

1. Snow as a plot device is often used to give an air of isolation. Which suspenseful movie, about a hotel called the Outlook and with a "REDRUM" motif, scared the pants off us in 1980?

From Quiz
There's No Business Like Snow Business

Answer: The Shining

Martin Scorsese rates "The Shining" as one of the eleven scariest movies of all time. Starring Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance, a writer who takes a job as a caretaker at a remote Colorado hotel over the winter. He takes his wife (Shelley Duvall) and his young son Danny who has the "shining", a telepathic ability to see things in the past; in this case the horrors that occurred in the hotel's past. Because the hotel is haunted, Jack's sanity is affected but when the hotel becomes snowbound for a elongated period, causing total isolation, Jack descends into madness. (His book, he has been writing, consists of one line, "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy"). Jack turns on his family, and the tension becomes unbearableas we watch to see if Danny and his mother will escape. This was one of the most effective movies made from a Stephen King novel. Many decades after this movie was released these movie still has an effect on this author and while it might have been literally thrilling to watch in 1980, this author has never subsequently stayed in a hotel if it was snowing outside.

2. Who played the sinful woman in the 1932 movie "Rain" opposite Walter Huston?

From Quiz Like Tears in Rain

Answer: Joan Crawford

Joan Crawford (1904-1977) was the actress we were looking for. In the 1932 movie "Rain" she played the role of Sadie Thompson, a prostitute stranded on the Polynesian island Pago Pago together with a missionary couple (played by Walter Huston and Beulah Bondi). The reverend Davidson tried to lead Sadie Thompson to a decent and Christian lifestyle, but his effort was not always appreciated. Joan Crawford won an Oscar for the title role in "Mildred Pierce" (1945) and also starred in "Sudden Fear" (1946) and "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane" (1962). Nargis (1929-1981) was the leading actress in the Hindi movie "Barsaat" (1949), translated for the English speaking world under the title "Rain". Nargis played the role of Reshma, who accidentally met Pran (role by Raj Kapoor) and fell hopelessly in love with him. Cynthia Pruitt is the name of the actress who played a cabdriver in the 1989 movie "Rain". She drove her cab through a New York heat wave and sought for a deeper spiritual insight. The main male role was for William "Bill" Rice. Brooklyn Sudano (born 1981) played the title role (Rain Arnold) in a 2006 drama about a talented pianist who grew up as the daughter of an African-American couple, but then faced the reality that her biological father was a Anglo-Saxon upper class man. Robert Loggia and Faye Dunaway were also in this movie. I could have picked any of more than a dozen movies with the title "Rain", but I wanted to include one of the older movies.

3. In the 1996 film "Twister", Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton are members of a storm chasing team that develops a weather machine for tornadoes. What did they name it?

From Quiz Looks Like Rain

Answer: Dorothy

Digital Orphagraphic Telemeter or D.O.T.3 is the actual name of Dorothy. The team would place the machine in the path of a tornado in an effort to obtain detailed information about the storm.

4. In 1989, Spike Lee released what film about a community in Brooklyn and the events occurring on a single day in a heat wave?

From Quiz You, Me, and the Weather

Answer: Do the Right Thing

Perhaps one of Spike Lee's most famous films, "Do the Right Thing" has been regarded by critics as one of his most important. Taking in $37,000,000 in the box office, the movie was added to the National Film Registry for its importance in American culture. Starring Spike Lee, Danny Aiello, Samuel L. Jackson and a large ensemble cast, "Do the Right Thing" followed a group of inner-city residents as they struggled with racial tensions and the stifling weather problem (in the form of a heat wave). The overpowering, warm weather symbolized racial tensions, a major theme of the film. While the movie was nominated for two Academy Awards, it did not win either.

5. Which movie followed Tommy Swann, an escaped convict, and his former fiancée Rose Sandigate, in an attempt to flee the country? Michael Fish might not agree with the title.

From Quiz Like Tears in Rain

Answer: It Always Rains on Sunday

Now why did Michael Fish pop up in a movie quiz? Michael Fish was not involved in the movie industry, but for several years presented the BBC weather forecast. In this occupation, he had plenty of statistics ready at hand to deny that "it always rains on Sunday". "It Always Rains on Sunday" (1947) starred John McCallum as Tommy Swann, the ex-convict; Googie Withers as Rose; and Edward Chapman as her boring husband George. The critics especially appreciated the complex narrative mixing romance and noir elements. Director was Robert Hamer and the movie was an atypical production of Ealing Studios, better known for their comedies. "Iulskiy Dozhd" (1967) was the official title of a Russian movie with the translated title "July Rain". Lena (played by Evgenya Uralova) broke up with her fiancé because of his bad character, and sought love with various artists. Then she met Zhenya (role by Ilya Bylinkin)... "It Rained All Night the Day I Left" (1980) is the English title for the French-Canadian-Israeli coproduction that hit the European movie theatres under the title "Deux Affreux sur le Sable" - not really a translation, as the French words mean something as "Two Bad Guys on the Sand". Tony Curtis and Louis Gossett Junior played two weapon merchants working for "the colonel" - a widow played by Sally Kellerman. "Rainbow: Live in Munich 1977" was a rock movie, featuring the European tour of the British rock band Rainbow, starring guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, singer Ronnie James Dio and drummer Cozy Powell.

6. In the 2000 film "The Perfect Storm" with George Clooney, what is the name of his boat?

From Quiz Looks Like Rain

Answer: Andrea Gail

The story is based on the real life loss of the Andrea Gail and crew in 1991. Out of Gloucester, Massachusetts Captain Tyne (George Clooney) and his crew are in need of a big catch when they run head long into a hurricane.

7. While not specifically about a particular weather anomaly, the main character, played by Nicolas Cage, had a job that fit the theme quite well. What 2005 Gore Verbinski film would this be?

From Quiz You, Me, and the Weather

Answer: The Weather Man

"The Weather Man", released in 2005, starred Nicolas Cage as (brace yourselves) a weather man who really didn't have a lucky streak. Plagued by problems off-camera, Cage's character dealt with his personal and family life while trying to be successful on-screen and at work. The movie also starred Michael Caine, and while Verbinski, who helmed the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies and "The Ring", has been notable for generating revenue, "The Weather Man" bombed taking in only $19,000,000. Critics didn't really care for it either, so things never really worked out. Coincidentally, Cage also starred in "Windtalkers" in 2002. It wasn't really about the wind.

8. In 1955 Lana Turner played the wife of Lord Esketh (role by Michael Rennie), whom she was unfaithful to - she fell for the local doctor Rama Safti. What was the title of this movie?

From Quiz Like Tears in Rain

Answer: The Rains of Ranchipur

The name of the doctor in the question should have directed you to the Indian subcontinent - Ranchipur, thus. "The Rains of Ranchipur" (1955) was a remake of the 1939 movie "The Rains Came", with principal roles for Myrna Loy (Lady Esketh), Tyrone Powell (Major Rama Safti) and Nigel Bruce (Lord Esketh). In "The Rains of Ranchipur", Rama Safti was played by Richard Burton. The movie came to a climax when a natural disaster caused an epidemic, and Dr. Safti had to choose between his profession and his love interest. "Warm Texas Rain" (2000) showed Steven Bauer as a marine falling once again for the charms of a woman whose attentions had previously landed him in jail. In Dutch there is a proverb about a donkey not hitting twice the same stone, but apparently this doesn't apply to the scenario of this movie. "Rain over Santiago" (1975) was the English title of the French movie "Il pleut sur Santiago", starring John Abbey, Jean-Louis Trintignant and Bibi Andersson. This movie was a fictionalized retelling of the coup d'état in Chile in 1973, when general Augusto Pinochet replaced the left-wing Salvador Allende. "Il pleut sur Santiago" did not focus on the major personalities involved in the coup (Allende and Pinochet), but rather on some people they were acquainted with. "Miris kise na Balkanu" (2011, international title "The Scent of Rain in the Balkans") was a Serbian movie about a Jewish family living in Sarajevo just before the outbreak of World War I. The principal roles were played by Mirka Vasiljevic and Aleksandra Bibic.

9. Which actress was teamed up with Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor in "Singin' in the Rain" in 1952?

From Quiz Looks Like Rain

Answer: Debbie Reynolds

At the time of filming of the famous title song dance routine, Gene Kelly was suffering with a 103 degree temperature. With an umbrella as a prop, Kelly danced and splashed through puddles, all while fighting a fever.

10. A film in the documentary genre, what 2006 weather-themed movie was narrated by Al Gore?

From Quiz You, Me, and the Weather

Answer: An Inconvenient Truth

Premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006, "An Inconvenient Truth" was integral in promoting awareness of global warming and climate change. Debunking many scientific myths and providing proof that humans have been the cause of possibly irreversible damage to our planet, Al Gore's work in the film won an Academy Award for 'Best Documentary Feature' (and 'Best Original Song'). The movie earned nearly $50,000,000 in the box office and became one of the highest-grossing theatrical-run documentaries of all time. Gore went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize the following year.

11. Abandoned by her boyfriend, a pregnant teenager met a nice woman who later took her in after the baby was born. Unfortunately, the woman was killed when a tornado later hit their town. Which movie was this?

From Quiz It Was a Dark and Stormy Quiz...

Answer: Where the Heart Is

As a despondent Novalee (Natalie Portman) waited outside of Wal-Mart after Willy Jack had left her, Sister Husband (Stockard Channing) offered her a welcome to town and a buckeye tree. Sister later offered Novalee a place to live when she was once again abandoned, this time at the hospital after having her baby. The tornado, which came a few years later, killed Sister, who didn't make it home in time to get in the shelter. "Where the Heart Is" (2000) also starred James Frain, Ashley Judd and Dylan Bruno.

12. Which comedy starred Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds and Jean Hagen?

From Quiz Like Tears in Rain

Answer: Singin' in the Rain

"Singin' in the Rain" (1952) was set in 1927, when the era of silent movies ended and the "talkies" started to take over. Gene Kelly and Jean Hagen played the roles of Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont, the (fictive) biggest stars of the silent movies. When Don insisted on playing a role in a romantic musical comedy, he discovered Lina's voice to be quite unfit for the new era. Then Kathy Selden (role by Debbie Reynolds) came up with the perfect solution: Lina would do the acting, while Kathy would record the dialogues and the singing (without Lina knowing). "A Dance in the Rain" (1961, original title "Ples v dezju") was a Yugoslav movie (spoken in Slovenian) about Peter, a hypochondriac, and his girlfriend Marusa, an actress of more advanced age who feels insecure whether she still will have sufficient roles. "I Think It's Raining" (2011) portrayed Renata, a young girl consumed by anxiety. "Pray for Rain" (2017) showed Annabelle Stephenson as a young reporter who returned to her hometown in California and found criminality has spread through town.

13. In the 2004 disaster movie "The Day After Tomorrow", what kind of weather causes all the problems?

From Quiz Looks Like Rain

Answer: ice age caused by global warming

Dennis Quaid plays a paleoclimatologist whose warning about global warming goes unheeded. Around the world, violent weather increases to ice age levels in about a week. Most experts agree that even though an ice age caused by global warming is possible, that the time scale in the movie is not realistic, stating that it would take decades to hundreds of years to see such a change.

14. In this 2010 Martin Scorsese film, Leonardo DiCaprio investigated a disappearance on an island prison before an uncanny storm blew in and trapped him without an escape. What film was this?

From Quiz You, Me, and the Weather

Answer: Shutter Island

Based on a novel written by "Mystic River" author, Dennis Lehane, "Shutter Island" appeared in theaters in early 2010 and starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Teddy Daniels, an investigator called to the mysterious Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of an inmate who could never have possibly escaped. When a storm appeared on the island, he and his partner (played by Mark Ruffalo) became trapped and unable to leave on the only ferry back to the mainland. This storm caused certain damages to the buildings in the compound and opened up more questions in regards to the overall mystery of the film. "Shutter Island" wasn't as well-received as Scorsese's other films, but it managed to take in almost $300,000,000 in the box office (definitely a plus). DiCaprio later starred in Christopher Nolan's "Inception" in the same year.

15. "Fargo" (1996) was set in mid-winter in Minneapolis, Minnesota and Fargo North Dakota, the snow playing a critical role. The female lead, won an Oscar for Best Actress in this movie. Who was she?

From Quiz There's No Business Like Snow Business

Answer: Frances McDormand

"Fargo" was a black comedy crime movie by the Coen Brothers, about a botched kidnapping in Fargo ND. Joel Coen's wife, Frances McDormand, played the lead and won an Oscar for Best Actress for the role in 1997, edging out Brenda Blethyn, Diane Keaton, Kristin Scott Thomas and Emily Watson. While it was shot in North Dakota and Minnesota, none of the movie was shot in Fargo (unlike the 2017 television series). The movie was also nominated for a Best Movie Oscar but lost to "The English Patient" (1996) and in 1998, it was named as one of the 100 greatest American films in history by the American Film Institute.

16. Which colour of rain is associated with a movie featuring several themes, the most familiar of those being the competition between two bands of backing vocals?

From Quiz Like Tears in Rain

Answer: Purple

I hinted here at the movie "Purple Rain" (1984), starring Prince and Apollonia Kotero. While the characters played by Prince and Apollonia were implicated in a quirky romance, their backing vocal bands competed for a recording contract. Prince played a dwarf with a moustache who liked to dress up in purple, and was very happy driving a bike through the rain. "Red Rain" (2013) was an Indian (Malayalam) movie about mysterious cattle deaths, coinciding with the appearance of unidentified objects in the sky. "Silver Rain" (2015) was a Ghanaian movie about a poor homeless girl falling in love with a rich heir. Their love lead to a class war. "Black Rain" (1989) was an action movie about two policemen from New York escorting a Japanese criminal back home. But in Osaka the Japanese mobster escaped, and the American cops had to infiltrate the notorious yakuza. Maybe some director might be interested in filming Zeus' escapade with Danae, but I sought in vain for a movie titled "Golden Rain".

17. Name the 1997 film that stars Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Tobey Maguire, dealing with social changes in the 1970s.

From Quiz Looks Like Rain

Answer: The Ice Storm

Two dysfunctional families attempt to deal with political and social changes when an ice storm hits their small town.

18. Following the story of the Andrea Gail, what 2000 film about a ship at sea (in quite inclement weather) starred George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg?

From Quiz You, Me, and the Weather

Answer: The Perfect Storm

Directed by Wolfgang Petersen, who also directed "Troy", "Air Force One", and "Poseidon", "The Perfect Storm" appeared in theaters in 2000 and was quite popular with movie-goers (taking in over $325,000,000). Starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Diane Lane, and John C. Reilly, the movie involved a fishing boat at sea caught in a truly devastating ocean storm. While the film was said to be 'based on a true story', the screenplay was adapted from a book by Sebastian Junger. The film was only moderately well-received by critics, but it did earn a fair bit of money.

19. Who starred as the son of Lord Bredon in the TV movie "Tears in the Rain" (1988)? Sharon Stone was his only love interest in this movie, despite the actor's surname.

From Quiz Like Tears in Rain

Answer: Christopher Cazenove

"Tears in the Rain" told the story of the young American Casey Cantrell (played by Sharon Stone). When Casey's mother died, her last wish was that Casey deliver a sealed letter personally in London to Lord Bredon (role by Paul Daneman). Casey met Michael (played by Christopher Cazenove), Lord Bredon's son, and the couple fell head over heels in love. But what was the content of the letter Casey had delivered? Christopher Cazenove (1943-2010) acted in twenty-odd movies with theatrical releases, including "A Knight's Tale" (2001) and "Eye of the Needle" (1981). Furthermore he was in about ten TV movies and several TV series, of which the best known is probably "Dynasty" (35 episodes in 1986-1987). He never was cast as the notorious Italian diplomat and adventurer with an almost similar surname. Fernandel (1903-1971) played the title role in "L'homme à l'imperméable" (1957), marketed in the USA under the title "The Man in the Raincoat". Steve Zahn played a role in the 1992 sci-fi movie "Rain without Thunder". The short movie "Things to Do on a Rainy Day" (2009) featured an actor of whom only the stage name is known: Jaspar Law.

20. Sure, in this 1982 John Carpenter film there was an alien, but another danger was the Antarctic blizzard raging outside. What movie was it?

From Quiz You, Me, and the Weather

Answer: The Thing

Starring Kurt Russell, "The Thing" was a 1982 horror flick about a crew of researchers in Antarctica. After some odd events out on the ice, an alien parasite eventually made its way into the film and its unique perk was the ability to transform itself into the likeness of any human it came into contact with. Trapping the researchers in their compound was a friendly blizzard (of course). Only making $18,000,000 in the box office, the film was released around the same time as "E. T.: The Extraterrestrial" and fell by the way-side because of this cinematic juggernaut.

21. In which movie did the yuppie Charlie Babbitt (played by Tom Cruise) discover that he had a brother Raymond (role by Dustin Hoffman), locked away in an institution for the mentally ill?

From Quiz Like Tears in Rain

Answer: Rain Man

"Rain Man" (1988) is one of my favourite movies, especially for the performance by Dustin Hoffman. The plot started with a deal gone wrong for Charlie, and he had to come up with a vast sum of money quickly to keep his franchise of selling sports cars. Then his father died, and Charlie inherited only an old car and a bed of roses, while the lump sum of 3 million dollars was for an institution where Raymond lived. Charlie planned to kidnap Raymond and demand most of the inheritance as ransom, but gradually he learned to trust Raymond - an idiot savant, for whom (as for most autistics) every change of routine was a threat. "The Rain Killer" (1990) was a detective story in which a local cop and an agent of the FBI tried to hunt down a serial killer (played by David Beecroft) who made female victims whenever it rains. "The Rainmaker" (1997) was based upon a story by John Grisham. It featured a not well known lawyer (role by Matt Damon) in a legal fight with an insurance company. The stakes were compensation for the terminally ill Donny Ray Black (played by Johnny Whitworth). "The Rain Fairy" (2010) was a Czech fairy tale with reference to Empedocles' philosophy of the four elements (Water, Air, Earth and Fire). The Rain Fairy (personification of Water, played by Lenka Vlasakova), toured the Earth on a periodic inspection round and was shocked by the greed of most humans.

22. In the 1939 classic "The Wizard of Oz", Dorothy is caught in the twister and knocked unconscious. What wind blown item hits her, knocking her out?

From Quiz Looks Like Rain

Answer: window frame

When Dorothy wakes up, she and Toto are in the house, which has been picked up by the twister. Moments later, the house crashes back to Earth in Muchkinland. In 2010, The Library of Congress listed "The Wizard of Oz" as the most watched film in history.

23. Set in an Indiana town, what 1998 heist film set during a flood starred Morgan Freeman and Christian Slater?

From Quiz You, Me, and the Weather

Answer: Hard Rain

Directed by Mikael Salomon in 1998, "Hard Rain" earned just under $20,000,000 in the U.S. box office- fifty million less than its budget. Receiving generally negative reviews and a low domestic earning, the movie was considered a large flop. Starring Morgan Freeman, Christian Slater, Randy Quaid, and Minnie Driver, "Hard Rain" involved a truly rainy storm and the flood which followed in small-town-America. As the waters began to rise, a heist was in progress throughout the film. A damn burst, more water got everywhere...it was pretty wet.

24. Who directed the 1993 movie "Raining Stones"?

From Quiz Like Tears in Rain

Answer: Ken Loach

"Raining Stones" starred Bruce Jones as Bob, an unemployed father who would do anything to get for his daughter a beautiful (but oh so expensive) dress for her First Communion. Ken Loach (born 1936) was an English director best known for his movies tackling the question of poverty. He started his career in 1967 with "Poor Cow". His first success was "Kes" (1969) about a boy and his falcon, but the fact that the dialogue was fully in Yorkshire dialect limited the international breakthrough. Loach was a frequent guest at the renowned movie festival in Cannes, with at least two wins and eleven other nominations for the Golden Palm. He won the Palm with "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" (2006) and "I, Daniel Blake" (2016). The best known nominations were "Raining Stones" (1993) and "The Angels' Share" (2012). Alan Bridges directed "Rain on the Roof" (1980), a triangular relation between an aristocrat, his wife and the village idiot whom she is teaching to read. René Clément directed "Le passenger de la pluie" (1970), a crime movie where an American colonel (Charles Bronson) tracked down a rapist in France. Haider Rashid directed "Sta per pivoere" (2013), translated as "It's About To Rain". In this Italian movie a twenty-odd boy born in Italy to Algerian parents (role by Lorenzo Baglione) tried to transform his tourist visa into a definitive permit to stay in the country.

25. In the 2002 animated film "Ice Age", who does the voice of Manny?

From Quiz Looks Like Rain

Answer: Ray Romano

Manny is the wooly mammoth voiced by Ray Romano, who tries to do the right thing and return a baby to its tribe. Romano is best known for his hit comedy show "Everybody Loves Raymond".

26. In 1996, Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton came face to face with nature's wrath in what blockbuster film?

From Quiz You, Me, and the Weather

Answer: Twister

Directed by Jan de Bont (known for "Speed", "The Haunting", and other films), "Twister" followed a group of storm-chasers traveling through Oklahoma for scientific research. While much of the movie was based around the Paxton-Hunt relationship within, there were several scenes in which ripping winds, cyclones, and horrible storms tore everything to bits and razed small towns in the central States. Nominated for two technical Academy Awards, the film earned nearly $500,000,000 in the summer of 1996. The movie was co-written and co-produced by author Michael Crichton who previously wrote "Jurassic Park".

27. "The Grey" (2011) follows a number of oil-men stranded in a remote snow-bound part of Alaska after a plane crash. Liam Neeson leads the survival of the remaining men. What does the title refer to?

From Quiz There's No Business Like Snow Business

Answer: The danger of Grey Wolves attacking the exposed men.

"The Grey" was a 2011 survival thriller movie starring Liam Neeson. Ottway (Neeson) is employed as a marksman by an oil company to keep the oilmen safe in a remote Alaskan oil well. He intends to commit suicide but it is unclear why. On a plane heading back, presumably to civilisation, the plane crashes and only a few survive, including Ottway. They surmise correctly that they are in the wolves' territory, and need to get out. The survivors die one by one, leaving Ottway to face the alpha-wolf. It is now clear that Ottway's wife died and hence why he lost the will to live. However in the face off with the last wolf, he clearly wants to live. The credits appear and the audience is unclear what happens. A brief scene after the credits showing the wolf lying on the ground near Ottway, both breathing but erratically does not illuminate the ending. The movie grossed $US77 million at the box office.

28. In which heist movie from 1998 was the weather so important that the title does not refer to any of the characters, but to the atmospheric conditions? Main actors were Morgan Freeman and Christian Slater.

From Quiz Like Tears in Rain

Answer: Hard Rain

"Hard Rain" was indeed the atmospheric condition for this heist movie. In fact there was so much rainfall that flooding was imminent, and a small town had been evacuated because the threat of a dam collision. Just at that moment an armoured truck (manned by Christian Slater and Edward Asner) transported a vast sum of money - to the delight of the local gang (headed by Morgan Freeman). Soon it was raining bullets as well... "Acid Rain" was the title of at least two movies. In the 1998 movie with this title a homeless street singer (Darolyn Adams) was instructed by an angel with a secret mission in the New York underworld. If the singer failed, New York would be utterly destroyed in three days... "Gangcheolbi" (2017) was a South Korean movie, brought to the USA under the title "Steel Rain". A North Korean spy and the injured leader of the nation fled to South Korea and tried to find a means to prevent a nuclear war. "White Light/ Black Rain" (2007) was a documentary about the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the dreadful consequences.

29. Which Humphrey Bogart film from 1948 featured a hurricane?

From Quiz Looks Like Rain
